Our state government has announced that it will put the question of recycled water to the people of QLD in March next year.
Just a simple yes/no/haven't decided poll. How will you vote?
IMO they will never give us something that is harmful to our health!
YES from me!
a big yes from me, at least let them start using it for industry, so much of our water use is not even drinking water-yet we use drinking water...what a waste when we live in like the dryest country on earth...and
NO DAM

I'll be voting yes too. It's perfectly safe, proven technology. London has been using for years. Any town on a river is already doing it anyway. Treated sewage is put into the river and re-processed downstream for the next town.
And if even in the totally unlikely event that the whole system broke down and they pumped a bit dirty water back into Wivenhoe, who the heck is even going to notice? What's a little bit more poop in that dead animal, disease, car body, fish poo smorgasbord?
IMO they will never give us something that is harmful to our health!
YES from me!
what about thalidomide?????
NO WAY will I use recycled water:thumbsdown:

Big difference between thalidomide and recycled water.
Apples and Oranges, you can't compare them fairly. Experimental new drug (at the time) vs. proven technology that has been in use in many, many countries for years, and that has an effective safety back up if things go wrong.

yeh ok, lets take singapore for example. they use recycled water of ONE percent. the toowoomba govt wanted to use over 20 percent. big jump there.
and they claimed at the time thalidomide was safe but oops they were wrong.
I wont vote for recycled water. simple.
ummm, there hasn't been any new water for like a million years... all the earths water is recycled water.
if you are on town water you water is sitting somewhere in a big dam with fish pooing in it before it gets to you, if you are on tank water it is coming down your gutters where other animals might tread at night etc.
some people have funny hang ups, what about using perfectly good drinking water to flush the toilet??? why cant we have recycled water for this?? and install a tank if you want clean *new* water...with a filter....
do you have an alternative solution?
i for one do not want a dam in my back yard, people kicked out of their properties, endangered species habitats destroyed, good farmland drowned, when there are alternatives.
I am not stupid. I realise all the water on earth is 'recycled' but I dont want poo water thanks. as far as im aware i am entitled to my opinion just as you are to yours.
dont try to 'convert' or harrass me into thinking different please.
I voted no. big deal obviously other ppl have too.
if this was going to be an 'for water recycling' thread it should have been named so.
sorry if it comes across harrassing, i didn't think your tone came across so soft.
please share your opinion. what is the alternative solutions, poo dam water for everyone from someones flooded house?

to tell you the truth I really dont care what they do. instead of letting things get this bad they should have fixed it years ago. we have been on water restrictions for over ten years.
Im not interested in recycled water the way they want to use it. end of story. thanks for coming Im here til thursday. try the veal.

meme - Excellent post!
I think recycled water is a fantastic solution. Moving families from their homes when it simply does not rain anyway is not a solution.

I don't drink QLD tap water at the mo' - it tastes funny...we only have bottled...so I would vote that they can go ahead and do whatever they want because I won't be drinking it anyway.

That's an interesting read, and it was written in 2004. A long time before QLD really started to worry about dam levels.
Its about the mental restrictions that people place on themselves when it comes to clean vs. unclean. Admittedly I would have struggled with the roach test too
pffft Ill move.

Yes, I honestly believe that! :)

I wont vote for recycled water. simple.
There's a difference between putting a drug in the water, and simply making a smaller loop of recycled water.
Can you tell me what Singapore's water crisis is like?

It's called debate. I like to debate, see where people get their opinions from, not harrassment.. not converting.
And Cel, they tried.. they couldn't possibly predict what has happened. The weather patterns have been caused by Climate Change... nothing could predict the results.
Europe's been recycling their waters for years.
It's going to have to happen, climate change is just not giving us the resource of water enough to sustain our populations anymore.
The Government really needs to now educate the public on this recycling idea, so we can all make informed decisions BASED on facts, not just fiction or lies drummed up by the media etc.
I will be voting YES, we have no choice and we may as well get used to it.
It's not just recycled poo... and it's going to be purified etc far more than your usual dam water which at the moment, goes through ONE set of filtration system.
interesting reading faeml, thanks for the link.
to tell the truth i know very little about the proposed water recycling. i do know that we are living in a dry country and for people who are one step closer to the water, where you have to know how much you have, where you need to monitor your own dam levels and tank levels, where you are dealing with your own filtration systems and using water as many times as you can (think grey water), that it is obvious that something needs to be done.
if recycled water is so disgustiing for the thought of drinking it, what do you feel about the use of good drinking water for industry, why can't we push for recycled water to be used instead. tanks could be used on everyhouse for gardens. there are so many variations that could be conglomerated together.
it can seem like people who just turn on a tap and the water comes out can be a little blind about this issue, i know i paid it little heed when i was on town water.
to tell you the truth I really dont care what they do how sad, this is not someone else problem, we all need water to live.
ps, i don't eat veal-baby cow:barf:
I personally would vote "Yes".
However, when it comes to my drinking water I would buy bottled (just makes me feel better). Although I wouldn't have a problem with using recycled water for coffee and cooking.
Definitely the only solution in my opinion.
Oh... and one thing I think they should bring in now is recycle water stations in every suburb. So we can go down, connect our hoses and wash our cars, people with boats can run it through the motor (currently they can use good drinking water to do that), so we can get whenever we want to use in our gardens etc.
I cringe whenever I wash my car with buckets how much good drinking water is going down the drain...
We vote yes. Recycled water is far cleaner than what you drink now, especially if you live on a river system. For those worried about 'poo' in the water, if you live on a river and there is a town up stream you have more chance of getting nasties in your water than from recycled water.

Every single water molecule that is on the earth as been here from day zero. Which means that it has been recycled over and over.
So the water in a fresh spring in Fiji could once have been part of a puetrid vietnamese river...
Urine from an elephant could have been drunk by your little child two days ago.
Thank god for the sensible people voting yes.

Never really thought of it that way PMSL
As you said, thank goodness people are seeing sense into this proposal

Finally some sensible people!! Why do all the people on bloody T.V seem to be against it?? I will be Voting a big fat YES! We are all already drink recycled water... fish live in the water fish poo in the water we drink the water, Cows live near the water, cows poo, it rains and water runs through the poo and into the catchment, we drink the water.... do I need to continue about the birds that fly over the water the guy that is fishing and wees over the side of his boat??? Thank god for sensible people!!! I for one don't want people losing their homes to dams... we have two options at the moment, recycled water or build more dams... we have been waiting for rain it is not comming, so I wish people would learn to live with the options we have!! Sorry this was so long:rolleyes:

I dont drink tap water anyway, but I will be voting YES....and voted yes on your poll
Why??? Because Australia is facing the biggest drought ever, and no matter where you move to they are running out of water in Australia....
In my opinion, if more people dont start looking into the future, about the survival of our precious resources, and trying to preserve them, there will be nothing left for our children, and their children.....
In the next 10 years we wont be fighting over oil on this planet, it will be WATER.
SE QLD already are... Brisbane and the Gold Coast are locking horns as Brissie wants to take water from the Coast etc..

I hate the thought of it and dont want to head down that track whatsoever, but unfortunately what other choice do we have?

I have recently left Qld...however if i was to vote I would vote YES!! Of course!! At some point we will need to take responsibility for ourselves...water...as we have all discovered...is not a never ending supply here in Australia.
I also want to VENT on how pathetic I think Brisbane has handled the water crisis. I am so glad I have left Brisbane to wallow in its own stupidity...I continued to see people washing their BMW's and hosing their driveways as late as last yr??? WTF!! Dams are at 30% and now...FINALLY they bring in level 4 water restrictions...all I can say is about freaking time!!!
As someone who grew up in the bush where we were solely responsible for our water supply and understood its value...it makes me SICK to witness how city folk pour (literally) their water down the drain....as far as im concerned "too little too late". (I know its not everyone...but its too many IMO).
I was recently up in Mary valley...I saw signs all over the place begging Brisbane to "save our mary", "dont flood our homes", "dont drown our families". I wonder if Brisbanites realise that hundreds of homes will be flooded so they can continue topping up their pools and tossing water around without a care.
NOW! Brisbane wants to divert water from Northern NSW (my home region)....get lost!! Use up all our own water on our excessive lifestyles and then take it from other areas...when will it ever end!!
I was so sick of saving bath water to water my potplants, and doing my dishes by hand, having 5 min showers back home in Bris only to look out my window and see some jerk hosing his boat!!
AND someone had the hide to tut tut at me for using the showetr for 5 hours during my labour....or for washing my cloth nappies....aaargh:banghead:
Hey Stellarella, which part of Northern NSW are you?
Im an Ocean Shores/Byron Bay gal born and bred
i was watching a show on abc or sbs the other day about the whole recycling of water.
they did tests that were well and truely outside the norm. as in putting in 100x more chemicals/drugs (ie medication that people flush etc) into the water and then recycling it as per the proposed way and it still came out clean!! NO TRACE of any of the chemicals/drugs!
anyway i have always said yes since the whole debate came about. It has been proven to be cleaner than our tap water, so therefore if you think about it it will improve the quality of the water. (always look on the bright side)
unfortunately the mainstream media has taken the NO stance and as they tend to do with anything, will only give one sided stories
, trying to influence people. Using terms like "poo water" and "sewarage water". I mean come on IT WONT BE SEWARGE WATER AFTER ITS TREATED!!!
But i suppose if they were for the idea then they wouldnt have any reason to complain about the governments lack of effort, and "crazy" bandaid solutions.
where do they think the sewarge water gets put after its treated anyway?? does it just magically :wizard: NO, they pump it into rivers and oceans. where yes it does end up back in our drinking water:eek: OMG
:laughing::rolleyes:

I will vote a big Yes
I know that there is a water crisis here... And i want to do what ever i can to make sure there is water down the track.
It isnt like they are putting 100% in...
And as others have stated - it tried and tested tech. and other countries already are doing it...

I don't really like the thought of it, but we don't have any other choice in the matter....If we don't want huge dams built (which i don't ) and people getting kicked off their farms, and losing their livelihoods, this is the only way to go.
I will be voting yes, even if its just for household use, not drinking. I can choose to go buy bottled stuff for drinking if i wish, and I would be quite happy to use the recycled water for cooking and coffee etc....

Hi all,
Well where does our water come from at the mo??? From our rivers would that be right??? And what do people do in rivers that we dont already do in our toilets and showers and sinks???
So really we are already drinking recycled water.
I will be voting yes manly because my DH is playing a big part at the water recycling site project here in Ipswich so i would like him to keep his job well either way it will still be built.
All the water is going straight to tarong and swanbank power stations first they use something like 100 olympic size swimming pools of water A DAY and if they get this water plant finished by september october next year it will be in the guiness book of world records for the quickest one built and running......how cool!
T4.
I voted no because I think recycled water is safe to use on gardens and in businesses, i.e. power stations but I don't believe that they can make it fully safe to drink. How do they get rid of hormones/vitamins etc that people may pee etc?? I know that other countries successfully do it, and that we probably have yucky water already - but we use a water filter - not saying that gets rid of everything either.
I will start investing in bra factories for men as they will start to grow boobs  maybe that's not so bad as maybe my hubby can BF for me!!!
I just think perhaps they should use recycled water for businesses and gardens (I recall this being mentioned a few years back and the government dismissing it due to children drinking out of garden hoses - what's changed?!?!) Did they think it was unsafe back then but are so desperate now that they have changed their thinking?!?!?
I'm just not comfortable with it - but please feel welcome to give me more info as I'm welcome to be informed and perhaps change my views. And I hope not to be shot down because of my current views!! ;)

I think this is the biggest hurdle for the recycled water issue - misconceptions, urban myths, a serious lack of real information and all washed down with scaremongering that the media is so good at....
Yes, SharonU, there is a big "ik" factor that the public will have to come to terms with, and with the information you seem to have at the moment, I don't blame you for being worried about it!
You asked for some information, here's a link to some stuff I wrote on a thread a while ago about recycled water. It might give you a place to start to begin looking for information to make your decision next March
Link1 (http://www.bubhub.com.au/community/forums/showthread.php?p=525705&highlight=recycled+water#post525705)
Link2 (http://www.bubhub.com.au/community/forums/showthread.php?p=518906&highlight=recycled+water#post518906)
Thanks for those links. If you didn't find anything on Google, where did you get the info from? Just curious being a librarian and all . :)
I suppose when it all comes down to it you have more to be concerned about with the chlorine and fluoride that they put in water, then the "other" yucky stuff that floats in the dams!!

I voted no. I do drink the water now but each night I boil it up then refridgerate it.
I dont know enough about drinking recycled sewerage water to make a decision ATM.
Does it really matter what we think? I think the G'ment will introduce it anyway. I do everything right by my water supply and we are one of the suburbs they will lessent the water pressure for.
But what are the alternatives, I dont really see any.

we need to do something and i doubt that the recycled water will have more chemicals in it than water we already drink.
i vote yes.
