View Full Version : Safety gates
We are trying to find a safety gate for the top of stairs. I have been told that you should always get a fixed one and not a pressure mounted gate for the top of stairs but every shop i go into the assistant says don't worry abotu that and it is difficult to find a fixed one. Does anyone have any suggestions?

We have a Baby Dan fixed gate which we found at Babies Galore. We don't have stairs but we had to fill a gap almost two metres wide. It was the only gate on the market that was suitable (without joining lots of extensions together and compromising the stability).
Go to Target!! They have a good range. We bought a wall mounting gate for the top of our stairs - i think it is 'the first years' brand. It is fabulous. A normal gate may be fine while you have a small crawling, non-adventurous bub, but as soon as they are standing and pushing and testing their limits, you will NEED a fixed one.
Go, go now!! :D

I am the gate queen (we have 3 sets of nasty stairs that all land on tiles) so here is what we have found!!!
We've got an awesome gate for stairs - the Kiddy Guard :smiliedance:. We bought it from KidSafe and have been hugely impressed. Its actually a flexible mesh that you attach to the wall and that fully retracts when you open it, so it is not a trip hazard. Bit fiddly but you can open one handed. Great length too if you have a wider opening.
We have a pressure mounted one that friends gave us that we use at the top of our deck stairs - its awful. Its a pain to open, it needs constant readjustment because it shifts, its got a bar along the bottom that sits in the middle of the top stair so its real easy to trip and it just doesn't feel as secure as the others. It may be fine where it doesn't matter if it falls but its not great for stairs. Oh and the little man knows how to open it at 17 months.
We also have a foot operated gate for the third set of stairs and because it sits on the landing it's fine, (whereas it wouldn't work for our top stairs). I think its a safety 1st one, we bought it at Target and I've seen it and the extensions at Big W. I much prefer this gate for ease of use. We initially had it block off the kitchen and it was great when you had hands full carrying plates etc. Little people can't open it (they eventually work out most others I've found) because they are not sufficiently heavy to activate the foot mechanism.
