In regards to the thread tooth decay...if you NEVER give your child things like cordial, lollies, fizzy drinks and so on..........
What to they get as a treat??

Sorry can't help my boy gets lollies and bikkie as treats oocasionally. But has his teeth brushed twice a day which I am confident prevents any decay.
we try and stay away from food rewards/treats so if he does do something good, we usually reward him with something small like a cool sticker (that he proudly wears for the rest of the day) or little matchbox cars when he was being toilet trained (they cost like $2).
why do we always have to reward with food?

I know I allow my DD to have those naturals lollies and fizzy drinks/ cordial....
In moderation I always thought it was ok....aslong as they eat a healthy well balanced diet.
I just dont know what else could be a treat if your child already eats the "healthy alternative" how is it a treat?....Or do you trick them into thinking it is a treat even if it really isnt?
I didnt mean as a reward a meant as a change something "special" and differant to usual....sorry if I confused anyone!
Basically a food thats only an after school/nap snack or a weekend thing....something thats not part of your usual menu.

As a sometimes food (like Elmo calls them), I give my son
Allens Natural's lollies, the apple & blackcurrant ones as he doesnt eat normal lollies......
100% fruit bar, usually apricot
Fruit in Jelly
'Cottees' No added sugar cordial
No added Sugar juice
Chicken chips (the coles brand ones, they are like twisties)
Bikkies - most types he will eat...lol
Nutella sandwhich
As healthy snacks I give him,
Grapes
Paw paw
Apple
Ice - he loves his ice
No colour no sugar Iceblocks
Carrot sticks
Cheese
Yoghurt
Rice Crackers
His teeth get brushed twice a day, and he loves his cold water, so I dont see a problem with him having unhealthy snack foods occasionally, but they are not used as rewards...
Rewards for my son at the moment are BIG HUGS & a KISS, with a "mummies proud of you" for example.....

Well with bananas the price they are at the moment they have become a rare treat in or house:laughing: .
So I guess anything that is not usually given will be like a treat to the child whether it be a healthy alternative or not I guess.
sorry guys! you meant a like a snack or something different other than their usual stuff?
i'm with you now. :D i guess you can suss out what your kids fav fruit is, like, owen LOVES grapes but they're expensive but because he loves them so much every now and then i buy some.
same with watermelon and now bananas. smoothies are also fun for them as a treat, get them to put the fruit in he blender etc so its a real novelty but healthy at the same time.
i also freeze fruit smoothies if he doesn't have it all and they make icy poles later on.
My kids treats are:
DD goes mad for a boiled egg..???
lol same with my DD1, an egg sammie is her absolute fav! Or grapes/watermelon/strawberrys!
I made sandwiches for DD1 and her friend on Saturday for lunch, there were 2 egg sammies cut into 4 triangles. Tyler promptly stated 'I dont like egg sandwiches' DD1's eyes lit up because that then meant she could have both lol.
The odd biscuit, lolly, ice block are givin as treats in this house once in a blue moon. But mainly anything eaten outside of meal time is fruit....yay for summer fruit!

Off Topic here....But how much are your banana's retailing for?? I just got the shock of my life I stopped at Wollies and they are around $7.50 p/kg....unlike the usual $14 average!

Yeah that's about right. Not as expensive as they were but I still can't afford more than 3!
Our local Woolies actually had the nerve to put a full page ad in the paper advertising bananas at $8.98 per kilo - like we should be grateful!
Back to the topic, we don't use food as a reward either.
Luckily DS thinks things like apples, cherries, grapes, bananas, watermelon etc are treats (which at their current prices I think they are!). We also have sultanas, rice wheels and once in a blue moon vege chips.
Despite hard pressure from the grandparents DS does not like chips, lollies or softdrink - yippeeee!

Its just everything in moderation here. I don't actually say "do you want a treat" more like when i'm munching down on a chocolate and Brooke is hovering around me saying "more" for some food .. I'll just give her some and she'll either stay put and finish it with me or have a bite and keep playing.
I think moderation is the key with the 5 veg's and 3 fruits in the back of the mind always and teeth brushing daily and lots of water.

DD usually only has treats if it is someones birthday or she is at Grandma's, but some weekends we go up to the dam near us and we swing through the bakery on the way and she has a finger bun. Oh how she loves finger buns!
She also has fruit toast almost every day- it is a meal in itself as I buy a really good (and expensive damn it!) one for her every week. And we try to stick mostly to fresh fruit, yoghurt, water (she loves water thankfully!) cheese, and she really loves chicken too (which I bake in the oven) She also has a taste of whatever I have usually. She chucks a tanty otherwise! It is making me eat much healthier food :-D Also, watercrackers & cheesemite rusks are a favourite at the moment for snack time. Mostly she loves fruit though- bannana's are the flavour of the month! Next favourite is rockmelon which I use the melon baller on so she has little balls of melon, next strawberries (god she has expensive taste!!!)
