Does anyone have any experience with babies that teeth early? My little one is 9 weeks old is teething already. She has developed to 2 lumps in her gums in the last week and is chewing on everything (even her bottle which makes feeding difficult). I know this is new becaue my husband lets her chew on his fingers often and has just oicked then up. She has been rather a good baby up to now (as in rarely cries) but is now upset often for no apparent reason? Any advice?

Thanks

Hi Astonsmum

I actually don't have any experience with early teething as my kids were all late teethers at around the 11 month mark but I will put in my two cents worth anyway.

I found that my kids went through a chewy stage months before they actually teethed so I am not sure it is always the best indicator of teeth although some people swear it is. I found for me that the signs were acidic poo (and unfortunately nappy rash), very cranky, night waking and generally off colour. My kids didn't dribble much as well however some people say this is a sign of teething.

I used bonjela (which you aren't supposed to use on babies less than 4 months) and panadol when things got ugly. Things like cold melon pieces or one of those teething rings you can freeze are good for temporary relief but these wouldn't be any good for a young baby. Maybe you could try a health food shop or check with the chemist for something that would be safe for a young baby.

Hi Astonsmum,

My dd started teething at 2 months also - yuck! I also used bonjela just a little when she went for a nap because she simply would not settle - I know you're not meant to but it worked a treat and I didn't want to give her panadol. She's now 8 months with teeth no. 7 & 8 coming through, She's actually never needed anything else for her teeth since the first 2 came through though she loves to rub her gums on her drinking cup. Forget the teething ring she loves the rubber on the Heinz cup! I also always know when she's teething or having another growth spurt is she keeps snacking - ie extra Mummys milk!

Even though its not meant to happen for a while (teething) I know of a few Mums who's babies started teething around 2 months. So be assured your not alone. Good luck!

I have found that the Brauers teething relief takes the edge off the pain. It's a homeopathic remedy found at the chemist. Is quite popular at mine. It can be given on an empty stomach and has a real nice flavour.

Good luck :D

Lol My bub doesn't think it tastes nice! We usually use Hylands Teething Relief tablets but couldn't find them when we were in a rush after we ran out.
Ethan hates the taste of the Brauer product and makes the most amazing faces. I was very disappointed when I found that it is both flavoured and coloured! There's really no excuse for that in a homoeopathic remedy.

I am so glad there is someone out there who is wondering about early teething. My bub is three months old and I am sure she's having teething pains, although everyone is telling me it's too early.

I don't know how long it will take for her tooth/teeth to come through, but I hope it's soon because she's not her usual happy self :(

I am trying not to give her panadol unless it's night and she's inconsolable, but if it keeps up much longer I might be trying one of those gels people are recommending.

The problem is that at this age, they're not quite coordinated enough to manage those teething rings. Our DD has been chomping on her dummy, but she's always been a sucking baby anyway. That might not suit all babies if they're not used to one.

Speaking of teething pains, I hear someone who needs her mummy...

I suspect my bubba may be teething also. She is 4 months old. Although, she has been chewing hard on everything in sight & dribbling up a storm for a few weeks now. People have told me that they can do this for several weeks before they actually cut a tooth.

I also know what you mean about bubs this age not being able to co-ordinate a teething ring effectively. Mine can get hers in her mouth no worries, but it's just a matter of getting the right bit of it in her mouth! She usually ends up shoving the handle part in there, getting frustrated & dropping it altogether.

My brother was actually born with 2 teeth fully through & one well on its way, so I know we have early teethers in the family!

Please take this as the advice it is intended as, and not as a personal jab...

Aspirin (as found in bonjella) is not great for babies under four months. There is a reason why they have a warning on the tube. I totally understand that you want to relieve pain and health advisers recommend paracetamol over asprin in babies under four months. If you follow the direction on the baby paracetamol bottle you should have no problems. Start with the smallest amount given for your baby's weight group, in young babies this is usually enough to settle them. (Paracetamol has a slight sedative effect the first couple of times it is used.) Do follow the time directions to the letter, OD is possible and has happened many times, but only if you try to redose before the four hours is up.

With teething rings if you are going to put them in the freezer make sure 1. the liquid inside has an air pocket to allow for expansion. This will stop the plastic covering from splitting. and 2. you rinse the ring well before you give it to baby. Rinse it under cold water until a layer of liquid has defrosted between the coating and the frozen part. This will stop ice burns on the tongue, gums, lips and cheeks. (plus we know what happens when you put something striaght out of the freezer onto your tongue ;) ) I can't tell you how many babies I have treated for ice burn on their cheeks, it's very painful for the tykes. :(

Good luck, Jade is teething now (three down, 17 to go) and it's an interesting time indeed.

Tash, this may be ever so slightly off topic, but related to something you mentioned in your post.

I have to give my bub paracetamol before/after her immunisations as she has had a history of mild adverse reactions.

In your post, you said that OD can happen if you try to re-dose within the 4 hours. When my bub is given the medicine, she spits quite a lot of it out, regardless of how I try giving it to her (I give it to her in the syringe device from the box and try to get her to take her bottle afterwards to make sure she swallows)

How will I know if she's taken enough for it to be effective? I don't like giving her medicine unless it is absolutely necessary - I'm certainly not one of those mums who gives a dose of panadol or fenurgen (sp??) just to get a good night's sleep!! - so I am very cautious of re-dosing within that 4 hours anyway, but I still want to make sure she is getting enough to make her more comfortable.

You just sound like you know what you are talking about. Are you a nurse? (You spoke of treating children...)

Thanks!! :)

Hi Fiona

I am not a nurse, I am a paramedic in training. (also a St John first aid volly and a first aid trainer)

Knowing how much to give them after they have spat some out is a difficult one, that's why I advise to always start by giving the lowest amount in the weight catagory. That way, if they spit some out, you can give up to the difference in that catagory relatively safely. The only thing you have to watch here is if they are at the lowest weight in that catagory, then I would give them just under to start with etc.

I hope that helps

Thanks for that Tash!

Like I said, I'm always a bit hesitant to give my baby medicine unless it's necessary anyway, so I have been giving the lowest amount. She's a pretty decent size child & very active & healthy, so I figured it would be OK to top her up to the upper amount advised. Afterall, I know for sure she's not swallowing all of it.

I appreciate the help!

my baby girl is 14 weeks old and i'm fairly certain that she too is teething early - red cheeks, crying uncontrollably for no apparent reason, rubbing her ears, off her food, chewing on anything she can get into her mouth. I am trying SM33 gel (have only used a couple of times, it seemed to help), using a teething ring. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

my Matt was an early teether too (three months). I was reccomended to rub lemon juice (berri brand works best) into sore gums. apparently it has the same effect as Bonjela.
I found it works really well. Matt is 18 months old and i've only ever bought one tube of Bonjela for when we are out. also he has Nuby dummies with raised bumps on the teat and they seem to help too especially if you put in fridge for a bit first. Good Luck:wave: it does get better!

My boy started teething at 3 months :)

He was amazing about it though, we only noticed when I rubbed his gum and felt a lump! He had cut his first tooth without telling us!

He made up for it with his second tooth at 4.5 months though, he screamed the house down! We used bonjela on his gums and his dummy, and nurofen when he was grizzly. He liked to chew on DH's finger too. We also gave him teething rusks, he didn't like his teething ring and never used it
