Oh dear, ds woke up about 1/2 hour after he went to bed (dh walked very loudly past his door. grrrrrrrr) and had the biggest, loudest, longest screaming fit. He usually is so good.

No success with all the usual settling tricks. I think there's a tooth on the way so I gave him Bonjela - made no difference.

I tried a bottle - made no difference.

I put him back down and left him for 5 mns - he became hysterical.

I tried cc techniques - he became more hysterical.

He sounded in real pain by now so I gave him neurofin - made no difference.

I took him for a walk up the street and he calmed down (outside always seems to work in an emergency)

As soon as he was back in his room he started again. Ok, so up, down, up, down etc. Finally (after 2.5 hours) he has gone to sleep ON HIS TUMMY. Grrrrrrrr. He never ever sleeps on his tummy. Should I go and turn him over? I couldn't stand it if he started again.

Max is what, 9 months old now? Leave him on his tummy. He's so mobile by now that the SIDS risk is lower and if that's how he's comfortable tonight then leave him that way. Chloe usually sleeps on her tummy, knees drawn up and bum in the air and has done regularly from around 5 months. It seems to be a comfort position, and if he has any wind at all then you can be sure it's going to get some farts out of him :p

Geez Im such a worry wart. I went in to check and he was sideways with both legs hanging through the cot slats on his tummy.

I wouldn't get any sleep if I didn't do something so I vewwy vewwy carefully turned him over. He was nearly all the way over when "waaaaaaaaah". Doh! Don't you hate that! Fortunately it was a trick cry and he went straight back to sleep. Hallelulia! Fingers crossed for a long peacful sleep.

Thanks for your advice Martha, I didn't know that it was ok now for him to be on his tummy. One less thing to worry about. Yeah. Gee, where would we be without bubhub?

This seems to be a favorite position of many bubs! Someone else asked about this recently, and I often see Chloe sleeping with both legs through the rails. The other night she was on a mattress on the floor and had both legs hanging off into thin air. I now just leave her that way, when she tries to move or roll she will wake slightly and maybe cry once, but extricates herself and passes out again quickly. But then again, she's nearly 2. My memory is dimming with age but I think I did tend to shift her when she was younger.

I did phone the SIDS hotline when she started tummy sleeping and they said not to worry and just leave her that way or encourage her on her side. As opposed to trying all the various positional aids to try to keep her on her back. Some of them effectively pin bub to the bed!

Bubhub... I love it :)

I agree with Martha, just leave him. By his age he can reposition himself if he becomes uncomfortable. The only reason why SIDS recommends babies lay on their backs when they are young is because they cant reposition themselves. If your worried about him just check on him every 15 mins, but im sure he'll be ok. Theres nothing worse then waking up a baby. Like the old saying says "let sleeping babies lie"! :D

poor Max, and poor mum! its so upsetting and frustrating when you want to help them, but you just dont know whats wrong! sounds like maybe he had a bit of a tummy ache, maybe the combination of the nurofen kicking in and being on his tummy helped relieve it. Cooper has always slept this way as well, with his bum in the air, its so cute :)

i always found my bub to prefer sleeping on his tummy... he had much longer sleeps in that position also... added bonus 4 me!! he has slept on his tummy since 4 weeks... i was scared of SIDS at first but he was fine...
