View Full Version : DS seems hungry all the time?
They say DS (4.5 months) is a big boy, at the moment BF only. He has about 5-8 feeds during the day and used to have 1 or 2 at night and now wants about 3 or 4 feeds a night. As you can imagine I am wrecked.
My hubby thinks I am depressed but I think I am exhausted and very sleep deprived.
I have tried to co sleep and bub is sooo noisy and I am paranoid about rolling on him so thats not going to work.
I have tried getting DH to bring DS into our room when he wan'ts a feed but DH has to work so it's not fair asking him to get up 4 times a night.
When I feed him in the day he isn't really interested and just looks around and goo's at everything. I have tried sitting in a dark room to feed him with no distractions but that doesn't work either as he looks up and just smiles at me.:o
Also the last few days after a BF he throws up a fair bit of milk - every feed.
It's getting so tiring that I feel like I can't go out as he gets grizzly and because I am soo exhausted just can't cope with it so I have been staying at home. At least that way he has a few day sleeps.
His staring at food and grabbing for anything that I eat or drink and seems to be really interested in food.
Could he be ready for solids?
Could he be teething?
Could it just be him and this is the way it's going to be?
Any tips or advice would be nice.
Thanks
Hi there, it could be both, that he is ready for solids and he maybe teething or could be a groth spirt, maybe try a little bit of solid food to start off with and see how that goes, I would give it to him in the morning if your worried about allergys, see how you go

I would give it to him in the morning the first few days incase he has a reaction to the food, it's better that happens through the day rather then night
I agree to try some solids otherwise could be a growth spurt, or trying to increase your milk supply

DS is doing almost all the same things you describe and he is the same age....
He is teething....reaching for everything we put anywhere near him, eyeing of food and drinks (aswell as anything else in sight), and seems really distracted when im feeding him during the day.
I will not be starting him on solids til 6 months at the earliest...regardless of how much he reaches for food and watches me when I eat...he is a baby FGS and he is interested in the world....it doesnt mean he is ready for solids....
We co sleep and I just feed him whenever he wants. Exclusive BF til 6 months is monumentally important to me. I think it just comes down to how committed one is to BFing, if its really important to you, you will find a way!
It sounds like teething....DS has been more grizzly than usual and I sense his teeth are bothering him.... is your bub dribbling a lot???
And as I said before....I dont think you should start solids....im sure your baby is just interested in the world....not distinguishing between food or anything else they see...
I dont think your bub will be like this forever....its just a phase....hang in there!

What you have described sounds exactly like my ds.He was having about 7-8 feeds a day mayby more and was waking through the night for a feed which he hasnt done since birth.I have been trying him on some solids during the day and what do you know he slept right through, then i dont give him solids in the day and he wakes at night.I think because he is not getting the solids during the day he is waking at night for more feeds because he is extra hungry. My nipples have been so sore cause he is feeding so much.I just brought a new blender the other day and cooked up pumpkin, sweet potato, apple and pear and then slowly tried him on each,so now he hasnt had any reation to anything,he can have 2-3 feeds of solids a day and he is loving it:yes: .Goodluck with your decision mayby just try and see how you go with it?Sometimes it works well for some but not for others.
Your doing a great job.
Are you offering both boobies every feed? does he have both?
8 feeds in 24 hrs should be more then enough with both boobies on offer.
Do you feel that it is a feed, drink, comfort?
What is the your routine (I really hate this would though not found another that works here yet)
Eg.
DS wakes up after sleep he is cuddled, if he wants boobie he will look for it and it is on offer. I will not let him really play there alot, sure he will talk to it abit (just to make sure they know that he will be back later on, I think) I will say to him do you want boobie now or not, if no then it goes away and we play or do nappy change, I will wait till he is licking his lips and a little restless to feed him as it is easier to feed then with out him getting distracted by the world.
As others have said before I would just think that he is interested in what you have, what about introducing a small amount of filtered water, from the cup that you are drinking from. we have started just this week with the hot weather.
Only offering about 100ml (only having a few mls now) a day and not replacing a feed just on top of. The in crease in feeds at night is due to the protein level that you have in your milk is higher at night so change your diet to a high protein at breaky and lunch and simple at night.
Watch how much sugar you are having, even fruit as it could just be that bub is thinking that he is thursty from the high sugar in the BM, bub could also sucking to releave pressure in the head, may have a head ache, jaw ache teeth etc?
Wat if you moved the cot into your room and that way when bub wakes you have time to pat back to sleep rather then pic up and feed?
DH unfortunatley may just have to get up and take him, so that he is slowly encouraged to sleep longer rather then feed.
Your doing a great job and try and remember that introduction of solids, too ealry can lead to a bigger problem with the stomach not being ready to digest them yet.
What about you have a nude day boobies out on the bed and see how you go , you can rest and bub can have free access!!
All my posts are so long:rolleyes: GOOD LUCK KEEP US INFORMED
