Here's a question for y'all...
What do you stuff the children's stockings with? I've never put anything in them before, they just hang there. What would you put in for 2 boys ages 5 and 2?
cant help with boys but last xmas my dd was 18 months, i put lollies, undies and a couple of little toys (my little pony). Maybe if they're into cars or something put a few little ones in there etc,
Matchbox cars, colouring books and pens, chalk, santa chocolates, bubble blowing stuff, small tins of playdoe, cards, lego bits............
:) We don't have stockings but I buy those really big present bags and my kids get a couple of bigger pressies and I just throw bits and pieces in as well.DS will be 5 in a week:eek: and I have bought little hotwheels cars,a plaster paint dinosaur,a dvd-the grinch one, gogles for our pool that look like a shark mask, undies, chocolate stocking and he's really into lego at the moment so I bought him a big set for one his main pressies(god that stuff is expensive)and a couple of the little boxes as well. It's hard as his b'day is so close to Chrissy but this year he's getting a little peewee m/bike for his b'day(bit scary i know, but he wants to do it as a sport,we have a motorcross track near our house)so I have got him some gloves and safety gear etc to go with his Chrissy pressies.

I usually put things like matchbox cars, christmas colouring books, christmas cup, clothes and other small toys.
The cheap shops are usually pretty good for santa sack fillers.
My parents had pillow-case sized ones and filled them with sweets, small toys, art/craft things, games (electronic or otherwise) etc. was all cheap stuff but as kids we didn't care, we were wrapped with how much was in there
DH and i sat down and discussed what we liked and wanted to continue for our children.
We had a small santa stocking filled with bits and pieces and a pillow case filled with bigger presents under the christmas tree.
DH (Which i love so much) had the little stocking in his room.
It was filled with a few lollies and something(s) little to play with... now here is the deal.
The children were allowed to open and eat what was in the stocking but weren't allowed to wake their parents or other siblings until a certain time ie 6.30am. It worked for them, so it will work for us:laughing:
Then under the tree they had wrapped presents from santa.

I sorted DS's santa stocking the other day, he's only 2 so i've got some bath toy's taken them out of the packet and wraped them up individually so they will fit, i'll get some cars and also a couple of lollies, now all I have to do is figure out how to hang the things, we don't have a fire place anymore

Same here! We used to have a beautiful fireplace in our previous home but not in this one...I've hung the boys' stocking on the buffet/hutch!
both girls get stockings with little bits in it - so far this year it is:
those chopsticks that are one piece (maybe they will eat more if it is fun)
stamp set (not for mail, crafty ones)
some coloured pencils
some plain chocolates and wiggles biscuits
dd3 also has 2 headbands and a Dora pencil case and pencils
we don't have a fireplace, but prop the stockings up against the presents in front of the tree

Last year, I put some little books & a DVD and some small toys in Claire's (she was all of 2 months old!!)
This year I hadn't thought about it!! :o
I'll have to find some small toys & maybe some more little books & perhaps a treat...
(.... she did manage to open & eat a little cherry ripe bar from a box of Favourites her dad left sitting around the other day.....)
Colouring in pencils/textas and a book would be good for older boys. What about matchbox cars? My brothers used to love getting those in their stockings. A little watch maybe?
We hang ours on the flue of the fireplace we never use! Before we had this place though, we just hung them up on the door knobs.

This year i've put in DD1's, some Crayola stamps, crayons, a colouring book, some reading books, bubble stuff, and i'll probably put in a couple of candy canes/choccies etc closer to the date.
DD2 is getting a few bath toys, some crayons, colouring book, and probably some treats too (she's just at that 'sissy's got it i want it too' stage:rolleyes:).
Everything will be individually wrapped and tagged 'from Santa'. :D
We too had the rule where we could have whatever was in our stockings/pillow cases, so long as we didn't wake our parents before a certain time. Won't work for these 2 yet, but in years to come hopefully it will! :fingerscrossed:
Love it! ...do you think I could stretch it to 9am? ;)
Wouldn't it be nice:laughing:
I got the stocking idea from my SIL last year, this year DD's will contain:
nickers
DVD
playdough
hair bobbles
glitter thongs
skipping rope
doll shoes
and other bits and pieces from the $2 shops
We don't have a fireplace, so just sat them on the lounge chair.

DD's stocking has a sun hat, new pj's, soft sandle's(sp?), new decorations for her bedroom door, packets of rusks, couple tins of custard and a few choccies for mummy and daddy to eat:laughing:
I used to wake up to find snow globes, lollies, little stuffed teddies and.. my favourite things - THESE (http://www.intplay.com/images/TY6998.gif). YOu know them... the water game thingies with buttons and you shoot the balls up through whatever.. or ring toss and things, I saw them in Kmart :)
My cousin is making a stocking for DS this year, and i dont think it will be ready by christmas. Im not too concerned as i think DS is still a bit young.
Next year i am just planning on a few little things such as matchbox cars, crayons, a few chocolates..... Hopefully it will keep him occupied until some sort of decent hour!

This year for my 3.5 yr old DS his stocking will contain the following....
Hot Wheels sunglasses  (needed a new pair for summer)
Swimming trunks
Xmas DVD
Snow globe
Musical Xmas toy
M&M's
Colouring in book & crayons
Stickers
I am the biggest christmas loving freak around (suprising really, considering that my family practically defines the term "Bar Humbug")... but because I've never had kids before, I've never had a christmas stocking to fill.. and so am a little unfamiliar with the 'protocol'. Do you hang up the stocking (wherever you want... we don't have a fireplace either)... and then fill it with the toys. lollies etc while the kids sleep on Christmas Eve so that it is available to them christmas morning... is that how it works??
It won't be an issue for me this year, because my baby will still be in-utero... however, I'm a very family oriented person (again suprising considering how f***ed up my family is !!) and want to establish christmas traditions for the future so that my kids get to experience the christmases that I never got (I was never even allowed to believe in Santa !!).
All I've ever wanted is a proper family christmas... and by god, I'll be getting one eventually come hell or high-water !!!!
Personally i think stockings are the best thing ever!!! I used to love getting up early and checking out what was in it!!
We still do them for us now!! My bro, SIL and I do one for my mum (funnily enough she has the biggest one of all of us ) altho we have more 'adult' things in their now like maybe a mini bottle of wine or something but still have the little chockies as well of course!
DS will be 9 months old at christmas and i have got it packed full of farm animals! might end up putting a few other little toys in as well, but i think the little farm animals are just great!!! Cars and little things are a great idea like what everyone else has said! Also a packet of chips is great for taking up space!!! and it sounds VERY interesting when it is in the stocking lol.
This has really made me want to put up my chrissy tree and deco's lol... am totally in the christmas spirit now!!

We've always layed our stockings on the end of our bed when we were kids, so we do the same for our children. The main reason is because the stocking will amuse the child and give the parents a chance to get up at a reasonable hour!
Brianna's stocking this year has:
a tambouine
a little pony
a barbie
a mobile phone
stickers
bath toy
a couple of bouncy toys
I cant remember whay else... Basically nothing expensive - between $1-$5 each item.
Lachlan's has a couple of baby toys and some bibs!

We used to get a mango at the foot of the stocking then silly other things like lollies, and little toys! I think mum used to put the mango at the foot of the stocking because it took up so much room  who am I kidding saying used to, my parents still do it today even though the youngest in my family is 16 :o
