Hi,
We're expecting a girl in February, and I want a name that will sound good with our Chinese surname. We really don't have any Chinese culture, so we don't want an actual Chinese name, just one that will sound good.
Thanks for any suggestions!

Hard to say unless we know what the surname is. Maybe put down a list of a few surnames with yours somewhere in the list, so we don't know which one is yours. Know what I mean?

Hi. I don't think you need to be limited with your choice at all. I know lots of people who are of Asian descent but Australian born and they have 'standard' first names with their Asian surname (I'm thinking of Lee, Lowe, Kim.. haven't known any Chows) and it sounds fine.

I have also worked with overseas students for many years and they usually adopt an Australian given name to go with their family name for the time they are here and they all sound fine too. Except of course the ones who choose names like Prune, Cherries, Happy, Sunshine etc... :p But I assume you'll be steering clear of those... ;)

You know, I actually really like the name Cherry, but Cherry Chow? Naaah!

:D So there you go! You just check if it sounds ok with Chow and decide from there! Happy Sunshine Chow might be ok, but Cherry is off the list. Simple!

What about something like Joy Chow - it's a sweet western name with an asian ring to it.

hiya :) I'm a primary school teacher and I have noticed that a number of the chinese kids coming through have very traditional sounding "english" names... look to your classics... like victoria, elizabeth, (stuck now I am writing as I keep coming up with c names like charlotte or catherine *laugh*)... lucinda.... all of these are names that can be shortened as well :) so vicki, libby, lucy :) good luck :)

What about Mae Lynn? I knew a Chinese girl in college and her name was Mae Ling and I thought that was so pretty. My grandmother's name was Mae Rose. Mae's not a name you hear very often anymore, but I th ink it is very pretty.

We have a chinese surname aswell, I called my boy Thomas So.

Chinese surnames are easy compared to my friends surname - King, do you know how many names don't go well with king? (they were having a boy)

Lee King
Wayne King
Joe King
Ray King

The list goes on, we were totally and litterally rolling on the floor with tears running down our faces trying to find one that didn't have another meaning

How about something like Lotus. I think Lotus Chow is very pretty. Or Iris Chow is nice too.

Just some other thoughts. How about Xanthia or Anthea.

HI quriouskey, did you come up with a name?

No, we still haven't decided! We've got till late February though. I think from all the suggestions, that the names ending with -y or -a work best, or maybe -n.

Actually I'd thought of Lotus before :) I like the slightly Asian feel, while not being actually an Asian name. I'll have to see what my husband thinks.
