View Full Version : Refusing bottle?? :(
Hi
My DD who is 6 months, and has been bottle fed from birth, since she got 2 teeth is refusing to take more than one or two bottles a day  She used to have:
Bottle, cereal, bottle, lunch, bottle, tea, bottle, bed. Now she is refusing to have any bottle during the day and will still have the 3 meals and morning bottle, maybe a few drinks of water and very occassionally the night bottle. After continually refusing the day bottles we have been giving her some small yoghurts and also trying her on milk in a sippy cup.
Why doesn't she want the bottle anymore? Could it be her teeth she is getting her top teeth or maybe she wants what her big brother (who is 2.8 years) drinks? She wants what he eats :)
I think DD, who was born 9lb 1oz at 37 weeks believes she is older than she really is
Hi there
My bub never ever wanted a bottle, so I just went straight to sippy cups and straw cups.
He is breast fed, but I wanted him to be able to take water out of something! He never liked sippy cups, other than to play with, but he loooves using his straw cup. I just got the el-cheapo ones from Woolies and they are great.
It could be the teeth as well, but you just never know, do you. All you can do is try and offer and see what your little one decides she wants.
How much is she eating during the day, solids wise? Maybe she is getting full on solids and then isn't hungry for her formula?
oh, forgot to say that we've tried offering her the bottle when she is hungry, before a feed but no way will she take it. She usually has cereal (say a jar) for breakfast, small bowl of veggies for lunch and maybe 1/2 tin of custard, and for tea 1 to 1 1/2 tins baby food or yoghurt. Now she is refusing the bottle we give her a small petite miam yoghurt.

Hi Sharlee,
My little girl (almost 12months old now!) is also a bottle fed baby, I remember when she was teething I had some problems with her taking the bottle and even tried standing up with her in my arms and rocking her while trying to feed her the bottle!!
She now has 2 bottles a day - one in the morning and one at night but I'll soon be dropping the morning one.
Every baby is different though and if your little one is putting on the right amount of weight and is happy I wouldn't worry too much!
I'm new to all this chat, so I Hope that helps! :)

Don't stress. Every time my son is teething he also refuses the bottle. I think his mouth is just too sore to suck. He will go without it for 2 - 5 days. He will still cry for it, wanting his milk so I just give him the milk in a cup. Makes it hard though as he goes to sleep with his bottle - a pattern I don't know how to change. I wouldn't worry - they will eat if they really need it.

Im not real sure on this one because ive never had a problem with the bottle before. My little man treats his bottle like its gold! :D It might have to do with her teething but you'd think that the milk would soothe the teeth. I think as long as she is getting enough solids and some sort of fluids during the day she should be fine. Have you tried full cream milk on her yet? I dont know if shes old enough for it but maybe its worth a try. Sorry im not much help to you.

Thanks for your replies and suggestions. I was talking to my mum yesterday and she said I did the same :o She used to have to feed me custard, icecream or junket to get dairy into me  I hear of some kids still having a bottle at 2.5 years so I started to wonder/worry.
My baby is growing up way too fast :(
