View Full Version : Night Terrors
I am after some advice on night terrors. My little man is 21mths old and every few hours he is waking up in the middle of the night hysterical. When I go into his room he is still half asleep but screaming. I can only get him back to sleep by putting him in my bed(which I dont want to do) or sitting by the side of his cot for an hour to get him back down.
Its happening a few times a night and Im in real need of some advice because I need my sleep as well.
Its even happened in his day time nap.
Anyone got advice or ideas on how I can handle this.

My DS1 suffered from them around the same age as your DS. Really scared us at first, I did some research on it, and found the best advice was to stay calm (very hard I know) and just let him know your there, but don't try to hold him down. Eventually he would stop - we could put him back to bed with a cuddle and kiss. Sorry this isn't much help, it has been awhile since one has happen. There are lots of information on the net.
HI
My DS is having Night Terrors, too. It's quite scary the first few times, and because i didn't know what to do, I took him out of his cot (:shame: bad idea, he went totally mental:banghead: )
Anyway, the last few times he did it, i just sat next to his cot and told him that mummy is here (no touching !!) and even sang some songs (twinkle twinkle...) ..eventually he snaps out of it and wakes up or goes straight back to sleep. But you will see when he's waking up from it, then you can pick him up and settle him.
I too take him into bed with me every now and then, though, not an ideal solution but at least i know he feels save....

Hi, my DD2 has been getting night terrors since she was about 1 (she is now 3). I have found that if I speak to her or touch her she gets much worse and it will make the terror last longer. I tried picking her up once but that was a huge mistake. I just go in and make sure she doesn't hurt herself or fall out of bed. She doesn't get them as often now but she will still get one every 2 or 3 weeks.
I have discovered that with her she will definately get one when she is extra tired. So bed time is quite early now and even earlier if she isn't well or has had a big day. She does get them more often when she is sick too.
Someone told me to try a few drops of Lavender oil under her pillow every night as it's meant to calm the mind and the body. I don't know if it works yet but she did have a big day this week and wouldn't go to sleep until late that night. Usually she would have a terror but she didn't.:smiliedance:
