View Full Version : will we ever get used to a hot christmas
Im finding christmas in oz weird its not the same ...anyone else?
im used to the dark nights, cold crisp weather lights on the tree lit up.... and xmas day all the children out in the cold playing on their new bikes and toys
it just seems weird seeing all the decorations in the hot weather:yes:
ok i wont complain on xmas day when im sat on the beach and my relatives in england are moaning about the snow and cold weather...in a way i miss the snow on xmas day:( ...when we got it!
anyone with me:confused:
Me, Me, Me. Its wrong, wrong, wrong:tree:
I just cant get excited about christmas in the sun. I like it cold and dark with the fire going - perfect face stuffing, movie watching conditions!
Yes Yes Yes... I miss a cold snowy christmas and no you never get used to it.
Although born here in oz, I spent almost every christmas with family in Colorado (USA).
I miss the Christmas tree being lit up inside, while its cold outside, the snow, the big hot meal... everything.
Not that I am complaining.. I love summer, just wish that christmas was in August.

i forget it even christmas coming apart from the fact you buy presents...on Monday I went into a mall and saw the lights and double took and thought heck its nearly Xmas...anyhow we going to UK for Xmas I just cant wait! I not that fussed by the hot one!! just seems wrong to my bones!!
I miss all that.. This will be my 3rd christmas in Australia and i still can't help but winge about the weather.. I am from South Wales- UK and love the cold dark nights.
i had my first xmas in the uk for 14yrs last year and we had a great time, i had forgotten how xmassy you feel when its horrible cold weather, the pubs are much more fun, there is decent stuff on the telly and always the good old xmas day movie even if it is always james bond or the wizard of oz
it is nice to be warm on xmas day, go to the beach , go for a swim but it just doesnt feel like xmas!
plus the NEXT sale is a huge bonus for being back in the UK!!!

oh yes the NEXT sale I will be there!!! just got to try and restrain myself from sending us bankrupt!! Yeh it is something about the lead up to Chrissy as well really form halloween onwards, the cold nights and parties, the smells of mulled wine and christmassy stuffs, the pubs are different you are right...and yeh it gr8 to have the sun and sand and sea but its just not Xmas as you say...I am so excited my baby having her first christmas in the same house I had mine!! sleeping in the same room too!! :tree: :xmas: :reindeer:
big tip get to the next sale early!!!! I think the doors opened at 5am so it was bloody freezing, all the good stuff is gone by 10am!
Is this your first crimbo here? This will be my last I started to feel chrismassy last year, but gotta say looking forward to a years time where we will be over in the UK should be fun!
Me too this is our 2nd Christmas here and we're really struggling with not feeling christmassy I keep forgetting it's only 31 days away and I've hardley done any shopping yet. The kids still enjoy it but it's not the same for us. We miss the dark nights having the lights on the tree all day and seeing all the houses lit up. :tree:
I'd love to go back for Christmas one year but I can't see it happening.
I don't think I'll ever get used to it.
Christmas was never a celebration when I was back home (we aren't Christian) but I still loved the time of year - the lights, the tinsel, the roasted chestnuts vendors out on the street ... Here, you can't see the lights for the sun, the tinsel is melting due to aforementioned sun and never mind roasted chestnuts, pass me the ice cream.
And yes, I miss the Christmas specials! Isn't it weird how over here they dump all the rubbish onto TV during Christmas time instead of having great stuff to look forward to?

Yes I'm with you all - it's wrong wrong wrong. I want to be wrapped up and going late night Christmas shopping with my nose freezing, then stopping in a pub to get warm :reindeer: . I've got no probs with the shopping tho - except DH's side as he's useless at recommending anything, but I think most are like that.,
And yes the telly is good at Christmas in the UK and the NEXT sale always had good things.
Next year we're trying to organise a family Christmas in Sweden or somewhere where it will be all snowy!!:tree:

I know this is an old post but just wanted to chuck my comment in too.
I am still not used to hot Christmasses. I have had 5 here now and I don't feel at all festive. Last year was the first time it felt slightly Christmassy and that was because my son, 3, understood for the first time.
I'd love to have a Christmas in the UK again but we just can't afford to get us all over there - why do they make flights so damn expensive!?!?!:crying:

I know...I woke up on Christmas morning just gone and said to my DH that this year we are definately going to the UK for christmas. Goodness knows how but we bought the flights last week. I am soooooooooo excited. (But nowhere near as excited as my mum!!):smiliedance::smiliedance:
I would love to be able to go every year...I love Christmas and cold weather...the lights reflected in the rain water, the feeling of finishing work the weekend before Christmas...the 'will it snow?' feeling...
...but I would not move back there full time!! I love living here. I would Just go back for Christmas!!

Me too... I love living over here and have no intentions of going back but I would just love to be transported back for Christmas time.
I love being wrapped up in my winter coat and going out for ALL my Christmas presents and coming back in the cold and dark (any other time of year I would be complaining!). It is lovely seeing all the Chrissy decorations in the houses..... they just don't seem to do it here.
One thing for sure is that it doesn't matter how hot it is here at Christmas we will always do the full roast dinner! Mad Pommies:thumbsup:
