View Full Version : Medical req'd circumcision
My 4 yr old is to under go a medically required circumcision next week and I am concerned:-
- he has never been under aneasthetic before, I am afraid of his reaction when he wakes up again. When I have had aneasthetic in the past I wake up in tears and throw my arms about, once the nurses had to hold me down and get DH in to calm me down.
- will he be in pain for long after the surgery?
- how will he feel about the whole thing in a few years time when he realises he looks different to Daddy and bro?

Just let them know your reaction to it so they can keep watch it affects everyone differently. Myself & my sister come out kicking & screaming it isnt fun.

Its hard to say because again everyone reacts differently. Being in hospy im sure they will keep him comfy.

Every child is different so thats something that will be a big part of what you will have to tell him. Im sure he has different hair or eye colour to your hubby or his brother. They all like different t.v shows too im sure. Each being on this planet is different.
Wishing you all the best :hugs: :hugs:

My DS1 had to have it done for medical reasons at the age of 4 years, mind you he had an operation when he was 10 months old so we sort of knew what to expect from him. But when he came to he wanted Mummy and Daddy, which Daddy was taken into him. Then we all got to walk back to the room with him, it was only day surgery so we traveled 1 1/2 hours home that night. He screamed a few times straight after only because when he sat up his penis hit the bed and there was nothing underneath. Once we got his undies on, (which had a nappy liner covered with Vaseline in it) he was much better. It was about a week or two before he wasn't scared of it hurting him to take the undies down to go to the toilet, I think most of it was in his head because of the first few time the liner got a little stuck. Just make sure you use lots of Vaseline on the liners.
If there is anything you want to ask me please feel free to PM me.
From my experience, it is always harder for the parents than the child.
Try not to stress, I know easier said than done.
He will need lots of :hugs: & after, that's the best medicine.
:fingerscrossed: that it all goes well.
Here if you need me.
I had my 2 eldest boys done 2 years ago for phimosis and it was a pretty horrid experience, but I was told that it was the aneasthetic that was causing them to freak out. My 3 year old just tried to run out of the ward after they brought him out of recovery, it was a bit disturbing, and my 5 year old was hysterical also. Because of this I had my newborn circd at 8 days, and it was a lot less dramatic, I can tell you now! My older boys remember everything, but my eldest has commented to me how he prefers it now he is 'fixed'. As angcaltam said, I think it was harder on us than them.
I still have to have my 2 year old done as he is starting to get redness (which from past experience snowballs to infections) now I am potty training him (he keeps playing with it, as 2 year olds do). I am in 2 minds about whether to wait until he has had a series of infections so it is proven to me there is a real issue, or whether or not I should bite the bullet and just get him done soon. It is such a hard decision to make, but the sooner the better is what I am leaning towards, since I feel just awful that I let my older boys suffer so much before I gave in and had them circ'd, iykwim.
So, I am in no way going to paint a pretty picture about the experience your little fella will go through, but if it is any consolation, my sons were circd in the morning, and were jumping on the trampoline in the afternoon. They were nervous in the bath and going to the toilet, but this was only for a few days. My husband had himself done out of sympathy for them, a few months beforehand, so could guage what they were going through. (the opposite to having boys done to look like dad, my DH got done to look like his boys).
On the day we were there, there were about 6 boys being done, ranging between 18 months and 10 years. The older 2 came out of recovery happy and smiling, it just seemed to be the little ones who didnt cope so well, which convinces me that it might have been the anaesthetic that was making them doolally.
I also have a friend who recently had her son done, though he is 7 months old. he had a little spinal block put in, which lasted a few hours after the procedure, and apart from the way it looked for a week or 2, she had absolutely no dramas with him in association to the procedure. I am going to look into something similar for my 2 year old, if I get him done.
I really hope it goes well for you, and any drama will only last a few hours, and you can pm me for support any time you like :hugs:
