Has anyone else experienced this with their child ?

Hi Heids,

my dd was diagnosed with an inguinal hernia when she was just 5 weeks old. I went to change her nappy and was confronted with a huge bulge in her groin area.....very very scarey for a new mum huh.
Anyway we took her to the kids hospital and she was booked in for surgery 4 days later.
I am not sure how much pain our tiny girl felt but after the surgery she would only have a few sucks to feed then fell asleep for the next 12 hours. (whilst all the older girls who had the same surgery were crying their eyes out) In all I went for nearly a whole day without feeding.
We had to keep her dosed up on panadol for about a day and a half after that, and she was unsettled for about a week. My DH's boss's son also had an inguinal hernia and had a similar experience.
I had an emergency c-section for my dd, so I figured the pain would have been similar. My wound also got infected so I was so vigilant for any abnormalities with my dd, because that was the most painful part of all. Lucky for her there was no infection.
There is plenty of info out there on the web, it's actually the most common surgery performed on infants.
Good luck for your ds, he should be a happy camper when he is all better! :)

Does anyone know the name of the one in the belly button. My son has had it since birth and the last time I went to the doc with him was quite a while ago and he said it should correct itself. It doesn't cause him any pain but he does have quite a protruding "outie".

Hi Tonic,

It's called Umbilical Hernia and I've heard it also should be corrected at early stages of the bubs life in most cases as it will not go away.

Are you in Public or Private Medical care ?

Here is some more information
