Been thinking of switch to cloth for daytime....
But i am confused... I was reading another thread about someone wanting to start - but their problem was oposite....
G is Huge - (yes with a capital H). He is not quite 6 months and is 10.5kg... And puts on weight like you wouldnt believe. He is also 74cm in length - 4 of those came in in the last month - so he grows quick everywhere.
With fitted - will i be forking out lots of money to support him - or are they diverse enough to accomodate his growth...?
As for the start up costs - how much am i looking at to start? Please keep in mind that i am a tight wad - So yeah....
How much is involved with washing? How long do they last on bubbas - compared to sposies?
Honestly - im looking into this for one reason - to save some money. Im not a real greenie - so i need the cheapest options. Im not really interested in going to the old cloth - i have a few pack already for spewrags - but am more interested in cloth - IF they can stand up to the comfort for bub as sposies do....
So any one??? Wanna help???
ive not long started havent tried fitteds yet...waiting for the postie to bring them  but ive got 8 green kids now they are wonderful! i only need to change damien bout every 5 hrs hes a heavy wetter too. They have trial packs & bulk packs

How big is Damien? I just looked - he is 3 months younger than G... But is he a quick grower? Do the GK look like they will let a bit of growth happen?
hes probl;y not as fast grower as G would be. Also my DD is 14kg they dont fit her though hmmm. Ive orded a tots bots fitted for her. If your looking for a cheap option pea pods pockets are good and a bigger size
oops forgot to add damiens only 10 weeks and about 4.8kg atm

Forgot to mention...
G is in toddler nappies already - so you can see my problem with growth. In toddler nappies before he can even crawl...
Bekky try trials to give you the best idea.
BabyBeeHinds have hemp and bamboo nappies that are one size fits all, from newborns to toddlers. They need covers, I use 2 a day alternatively.
I have about 12 nappies and I wash everyday. The best thing is I can chuck the nappies in with Hugh's other washing.

I'd recommend a one size fits all like Baby Beehinds for size, but they are more expensive, but you would only need one size and should last G until he potty trains, and even for the next bub. Greenkids are a pretty small cut so probably not good for G. Peapods are cheap, but you'd probably need two sizes eventually. Or if you can sew you could make your own.
Baby bloomers are a good price for the plain coloured PUL, you'd just need to get inserts.

Must look into this more... hmmmm
So Baby beehind are the better choice for size? but peapods are cheaper- but would need more sizes... hmmmm...
With the baby bloomers - what inserts are best - and how long do they last on bub??
peapods are medium sze fits 8-16kg lge fits 15-22kg.
dont know bout the others. my pea pods inserts lasted Damien 5 hrs or 14 hrs overnight

Boof is a big boy & he was about the same in weight as your G at his age !
You will find once he is moving more his chubbiness will settle down but he will still be a big boy just more in proportion if that makes sense. Boof was always in the larger nappies for his age was rather interesting !
We have used Green Kids since he was approx 10mths old & he is now 21mths.
They fit well but if you want them a little bigger contact Sasha via email she may be able to help you out with a bigger nappy ;) But honestly the original size should be fine but only get a couple to start with & see how you go because every bub is different with how they fit & work.
If you want a cheap type pocket nappy that isnt as pretty but work just as well try Baby Bloomers i have always had the Large & it fits really well even now & Boof is 15kgs. Her Hemp inserts are great also !

I like the pocket nappies - I think... As for prettiness - Heck id be happy with a plain colour (preferably Green :)).
What are the issues with Leaking? are their any? Do they really work as well as sposies?

You will probably find that the first couple of times you may have some leaks because every bubs is different in how you need to stuff for them.
I find that with my day time nappies we are quite happy to use just microfibre during the day ( i have the GK's ) they last for approx 3-4hrs which is when i would change him anyways. I use hemp when we are out & about because you dont get compression leaks as easy with them sitting in their pram/stroller/car seat for long periods. I then use a hemp combined with a microfibre for overnite & this lasts us for 13hrs easy !
It is a case of playing with them for the first few times to get it right & the hemp gets more absorbant with each wash also so that can take time.
It is easy though honestly i never ever imagined how easy it would be !
I only do a nappy wash every 2-3days depending on how we are going ( some days Boof is a pooper trooper lol ). G being a little younger will go through approx 6 - 8 nappies a day still so thats what you need to take into account when wanting to use them full time.
Pea Pods are a cheap option for fitted but are sized. I have the older ones which a Medium fit my one year old. Baby Beehinds are one sized and are very big on my skinny bub.
For a daytime supply washing every second day - say 12 nappies like BB plus covers - I think they have a package which would make it cheaper. Not sure how much exactly. Less than $500? Which equates to about 3 months worth of sposies. So in the end cheaper.
Just don't be tempted to get the cheapest option as if they don't work its pointless (though keep in mind the good nappies have a resale value)

I've recently started using cloth during the day
Bekky, so Im still getting used to it... at first we had a few leak problems, but I use hemp inserts and they need to be washed quite a few times before they are working at their best, to my understanding. I use GK's, and terry flats with covers till I build up my collection. I haven't done the GK's up tight enough a couple of times- which made it leak around the legs... but we are getting there:thumbsup: I think it just takes a bit of trial and error to start with.
Mandy
You can get leaks with sposies so same with cloth. It is a matter of what works for you and your bub. I like fitteds or flats and cover cos it feels safer! I just prefer them over pocket though I do appreciate them for convenience and ease at times.

Gosh. Im feeling alittle bewildered.
Me thinks i might have to have a sit down with Vevie -
*calls out to Jen* Help me woman! Guide me through this minefield!
Thank you EVERYONE - Im just feeling so confused which way to go. I spose its like that in the begining isnt it... I just want it easy and relativly cheap - easy washing - but reliable and comfy...
Hi Bek,
As you know I made my pockets (yes, gave up on the AIO's due to drying times). I source out cheap and reasonable PUL and microfleece and can whip up a pocket in under 1/2 hr. It has roughly cost me about $10-15 per nappy.
Em's not a big wetter, but I use a combination of hemp and microfibre in order to get the best absorbency possible.

Hmmm - Maybe I can pay you to make me some up to test run son....
on a side note, my parents get here tomorrow - hurrah for some help!!
It can be very overwheming. If you can try a few to start off with you will get the idea. If you know ppl with mcn check it out. I didn't have that option. I think it makes more sense irl!
Hmmm - Maybe I can pay you to make me some up to test run son....
If you want, I have no problems with that. Perhaps try one of ours first...in fact I received more PUL yesterday...how about a green one?

lucky you...can you rent them out??

Baby beehind are my favourite but NOT for a chubby bub like your son you could very well find the one size fits all do not fit him as my daughter outgrew them for about 3 months atr 10.5 kgs until she started walking and slimmed out a bit! And she was 74cm then too, only 12 months old...
Thats the bamboo ones anyway, the hemp she went out to the outside snaps and it was sooo snug for a while there, your son is going to get even snugger than she was as he still has months of growing before hes walking around to slim down so I don't think they'd last him either
If you go for BB's I find that motherease airflow and rikki covers have more room in them (size large) so I prefer those for my older daughter who is 11kg now and about 78cm
I hated green kids, they did not work for us. No matter what I did they leaked, the fit just wasnt right on my chubby bubbys
Fuzzi bunz bella grew into a size large for 3 months but is back into mediums now.. so you'd use large for a while longer than that I'd assume. They are brilliant nappies, I have had absolutely no problems with them. they are lots trimmer than BB's and great for going out.
Peapods have already been mentioned also and are meant to be the same as fuzzis although I've never tried them myself.

Thanks Charmaine :D
Son - That sounds like a good idea if you wouldnt mind - Did you make yours adjustable? How would they fit on G compaired to eM?
Bekky I can honestly say the fitted nappies we use- Very Baby & BabyBeeHinds- work as well, if not better, than disposables for us.
There are no "up the backer" experiences I had with disposables and breastfed baby poos, usually I'm pretty unaware Hugh's pooed til I open his nappy up.
Last week we were away for a few days and I had to use disposables as I don't have enough cloth, I got Hugh out his car seat and put his little jacket on, next thing there's wee all over him and me, something we've never had happen in cloth.
I generally use about 6 nappies a day.
Its all in the rise of the nappy (up the back) and the velcro placing.
The pattern I use measures for a pocket...
Rise: 39-44cm
Waist: 40-48cm
Thigh: 26-36cm
Measure G and see if this would be suitable. Its easy enough to adjust the pattern if need be to ensure more months of wearing:thumbsup:
PM if you want...

.
That is true! I have had a few suprises when changing a nappy. It seems to smell less too.

22-11-2006, 13:55
You can buy a 'little squirt' that hooks up to the toilet unit. It's a pressured trigger spray. Too easy !
HoopDeeDoo
22-11-2006, 13:56
you can get a hose thing called a little squirt from bunnings or online to rinse it right into the loo

22-11-2006, 14:00
Can you put it in yourself???
KarniF00l

Sure can. It comes with instructions. Just make sure that you turn off the water to the toilet first and flush the toilet until there's no water left in the cistern.

Must investigate...
As for washing - How do you go about it? Do you need a nappy soaker bucket thing? or can you just do it as a soaker load?
i put mine in a nappy bucket with nothing else in there. I dont have a little squirt
I just throw mine in the machine and press start!

Kaz - Do you use a sensitive wash detergent? I have stopped using G's and he hasnt had a problem - but im not sure if that would be the same case with nappies...
KarniF00l
22-11-2006, 14:10
Usually i just throw mine in the machine aswell and wait for a full or half load of washing.
You don't need to soak modern cloth nappies in anything just chuck them in a bucket to dry pail.

Thanks Kaz... Hopefully (with the beautiful Lambie's help) i will get all of this off the ground soon.

Awww shucks:o ...what colour is a tomato??
Bek, I agree with the others about the 'lil squirt'. I am in the process of talking Jason into it. I used the old "okay, say you were in charge for a day and Em did a #2...would you use your hand?...or would a Little squirt be more suitable?". I did get back to this..."why don't you rinse it out in the laundry sink"...WTH?? "and then have to transport it from there to the loo?".
Some wives, sure do have em!!!
