View Full Version : Not swallowing

Yes, its me again

I started MJ on Farex a week ago but she doesn't seem to know how to swallow yet. The food goes in and just sits there. If she does move it to the back of her mouth she gargles it and ends up coughing. I tasted it & i'm not surprised she won't swallow it.

Should I stop it for a while or just persevere?

I've just steamed some potato & pumpkin to try tomorrow, atleast that tastes good. On that, should i start one at a time for a while, then combine?

Also, when do we graduate to 2 feeds a day?

Thanks so much gals :D

Our daughter wasn't really into solids until she was just under 8 months... she would just spit it out. I would just wait maybe a fortnight and then see how she goes at a later time... it is such fun when they start solids though :D

She doesn't spit it out though, just sits there with food in her mouth smiling & talking. Its very cute, until she gaggs

She may not be ready yet?

I tried rice cereal once then just went to fruits- apples/pears. I now just use the cereal to thicken fruit and yoghurt up a bit but still not on its own as a meal- its like clag glue.

Bub does not like potato (bit claggy too) either yet and he's been on solids for a few months- i stick to orange vege's (pumpkin/sweet potato/carrot) and throw in peas. Vege's are just not as popular but ive just discovered that quite a few mums mix a bit of fruit with the veges, it is a hit with bubs- and i thought i was the only one

Sooo I'd probably wait awhile and for me it was a gradual journey on solids. He really was not interested for the first couple of months, more a taste test than anything else. Now he looks forward to it (grunts, groans, squeals when he sees me getting containers out of fridge!)

Have fun!

and mine still gaggs- half the time its a funny thing to do to get my attention and also gags to tell me he has had enough???!!! When trying a new food he will also gag!

I agree with Mummajack, it just sounds like your dd is not ready yet. Leave it a couple of weeks and see how she goes then.

Yes, I think waiting awhile before you try again is a good idea.

Our DD didn't take to solids until around 11 months  but apparently it is quite normal for lots of bubs to not actually want solids until well after the recommended '6 months' - and survive quite happily! DD certainly did - nothing but breastmilk for 11 months seems tohave done her the world of good!! She's definitely the healthiest one in our family :D

Hi RB

My little guy is a couple of weeks older than your little bubba....just thought I would let you know where we are up to...

We started on Rice Cereal about 4 or 5 weeks ago....he really seemed to like the idea of eating ie the spoon and stuff....wasn't real happy with the tast of rice cereal though.

We progressed to pumpkin first....after 3 days it burnt his poor little bum to the point of blisters!! So we are now giving that a big miss!! Next I tried pear and apple.....he loves both of those ...scoffs it down and is looking for more!

About three days ago I tried sweet potato....he gagged and then projectile vomitted everywhere.....what's going on there!!

So today, I thought we would try potato.....same thing ...gagged and then projectile vomitted everywhere!!

Not sure where to go now.....it seems he is a fruit boy!!

Did I read right that you can mix veges and fruit??? That just seems so odd....but them I guess if they like the fruit, it will help with the veges??

Would love to hear what people think my next step should be??

Cheers

Thanks for that. I'll try veg tomorrow if thats a no-go then we'll stop for a while. Like Benandrewsmum's DS, she doesn't mind the spoon, i give it to her to chew & play with. Its just the cereal i think. Tomorrow we'll see what happens.

Also another question, about commercial baby food, can it be divided up & frozen at all? Like tinned apples? Otherwise it'll go off before i even use 1/4 of it.

maybe it is the consistency, it could be you are making it too thick. Maybe just try it more runny and that could work. Good luck :)

Re: Tinned apples- I would not keep and freeze tinned food. Better option is to stew your own without the sugar just apples and water, let it cool then put into ice cube tray and pop as needed. Same with veges etc. I don't like the taste myself when food is tinned.I'd be more inclined to buy the babyfood in glass jars over tinned.
cheers Jen

I agree it sounds like your dd isn't quite ready. Baby cereal is quite thick so add more milk to make it thinner. both my kids screwed there face at the tast of it though grew on it. As they get older the heinz brand has different flavours. My 9mnth old loves the multigrain apricot heinz cereal. I have started using motherly cubes that you can buy from woolies or coles as they are so convenient and organic. My ds#2 loves it it is the only food he actually screams for more of which is good as it is healthy for him. Its about $8.40 a box and you get 27 cubes though i do use 4cubes per meal. :D

With the mixing fruit through, yep it works wonders, especially if bub doesnt like vege's.

I wasted SO much veges for about a month. Then he got to a point where he would eat about 1 mouthful before shutting up shop. Now we are at about 1 tablespoon and when the shop starts shutting i mix a little apple in and the door opens right back up again.

I'm going to admit i even mixed it through some tuna and pasta.....gross i know but after almost 3 months of apple/pear/yoghurt and cereal its working for us. Basically dont add it till they indicate they have had enough savoury, then just a little little bit (sometimes i think just seeing the apple container is enough to trick him). Try to extend how much they are eating each time before you add it.

Sorry for hijacking, just wanted to explain

Tried potato mashed with a little bm & boiled water & she loved it :D Opening her mouth and swallowing. Maybe she just really didn't like Farex. I'll stew some apples next week & try that.

Thanks again

Farex was never really popular here either. These days Andrew has it mixed up with boiled water and pureed fruit and it goes down much easier.

Got a problem :o I did a big batch of mashed potato and froze it in individual portions. Problem is that when i thawed it out it was kinda chunky, no-where near the consistency of when fresh or just refrigerated

Is there any way to get it back to normal, or is it still ok to give it to her like its turned out?

Thanks ladies

Hiya

I find frozen stuff changes consistency, but if you nuke it in the microwave for 10 secs or so and give it a stir it should come good again. If not, add a touch of boiled water or b/m or formula to get a good consistency going. I usually nuke it rather warm, stir it up well and then throw it in the freezer for a quick minute to cool it back to luke warm.

Some foods just go a bit weird when frozen, but I'm yet to find one that I can't revive!!

Ive never given Jayden Farex, instead i gave him baby porridge. Maybe you could try that instead. I also find that most babies like things that has a sweet taste like pumpkin, sweet potato, etc. If you still wanted to give the farex why dont you try and mix the veges into it. I know its sounds disgusting but what the little ones dont know wont hurt them!! :D
