Has anyone used the 2 week free visit coupon on the back of the Special K cereal box? Just wondering what your experience with them was? Did they try the hard sell on you or just let you use the facilities freely without any pressure? Thanks :)

I have not used the free pass you describe but I am a member of Fernwood and can give you a bit of an idea of what happens, of course it will be a little different from gym to gym though....

Generally with people using free passes they get you to fill out a short questionarie (about your current fitness level, what you want to achieve etc) then you are shown around the gym and are let loose to go on your own. I think they normally schedule a follow up chat at that first appointment where they will sit down with you and go through the prices and options (they dont normally tell you these if you just ring up) they may go through this on your first visit though... not sure. They do sit down with you as if you are about to sign up but all you have to say is that you are still looking around and trying out other gyms. Im not sure if they call you at a later date but i dont think so. It can vary of course, my gym is not pushy at all with its products (like their Slimplicity program and Slim shakes) but another Fernwood in SA i know is pushy with their products (they also have beauty services) and i assume they would be the same with their memberships to.

Fernwood is a good gym if you like that sort of environment. It is only women of course so there is no insecurity about it, everyone is confortable to show their buldges and wobbles. You are not just a number like at other gyms, staff will know your name and you will know all of theirs. You will generally make a few friends (even for someone shy like me!) which will make going more enjoyable particularly as you get settles in a routine of going and build your confidence. its more of a 'club' than a 'gym'.

If you have any other questions then feel free to ask away.

I am not connected in any way with them apart from being a member and am unbiased. I have looked at leaving before because I was not happy with my gyms class times (as were others) so i am certainly not going to tell you just to go to one for no good reason, but overall i think they are a nice club to go to if a regular gym is not your scene.

Thanks Nicole. I really appreciate your detailed reply. I think I'll try them out and see how it goes :)
