View Full Version : Spoon Feeding
I'm wondering what age babies spoon feed themselves (without getting all of it on the highchair/floor and none of it in their mouths?)
Dh (9 months) is going ok with finger food, but thinks a spoon is for combing his hair

Ds is only just starting to get the idea. He still needs help from me though & he's 18 months! No rush!

hey :)
I remember working with a munchkin who was 16 months old.. and it took three spoons to feed him!!! - one for each of HIS hands.. and one for me to make sure that SOME food reached the correct destination!!!
he will figure it out :D

We started getting Nathan use to the spoon as soon as he started solids, ofcause at that age he just practiced putting it in his mouth. From about 9mths I was able to hand him the spoon full of food and he could get it in most times and now at almost 12mths he has just started to get the idea of scooping the food himself, althought this is a bit hit and miss.
The sooner you can get them feeding themself the sooner you can go back to eating your diiner while it is still hot.

My DS decided at 12 months that he wanted to feed himself and by 15 months got more food into his mouth than I could. Now at 16 months, he won't let me feed him at all - he thinks he can do it all as he's a big boy ! If he has dinner and I haven't given him a spoon or fork he gets very upset.
BTW, I spoke to my mum tonight who thinks that it is unhealthy for a baby of this age to be 'forced' into independence so early. I don't think she meant it to come out the way it did but in her day, bubba's fed themselves much later.
Ahhh...can't win sometimes ! :D
