We nearly lost Huddy the wonder dog yesterday. I rushed him to the vet in the early morning as we thought he might have had a tick as he was lethargic and couldnt get up. It thankfully wasnt a tick, but they wanted to monitor him and do blood tests so he stayed at the vet for the day. I got a phone call a couple of hours later saying that he wasnt good and that it could be meningitis/brain tumour/tetanus!Mind you, the blood tests werent back yet. My husband then rang them, and they said that they needed us to make THE decision-send him to a specialist so they could do spinal taps($700) and CT scans ($1200), or heaven :crying: . Well, we dont have that kind of cash at the moment, so we started driving to the vet (bawling our eyes out) thinking that we were going to have to put Huddy down. We got there, the vet spoke to us, then we asked to see him. We had been told over the phone that he had been deteriorating throughout the day, so we expected to see him stumbling etc. He walked through the door like there was nothing wrong with him! Then the other vet came in and basically made us feel like sh*t because we couldnt afford to take him to a specialist to find out exactly what was wrong-'Well, if that's your decision not to go down that path....' . They gave us cortisone tablets and sent him home. Then my husband rang back later that afternoon to get the blood results, and they now said that he had pancreatitis and that the cortisone would make it worse, so we had to go back and get antibiotics instead. We are FUUUUUUURIOUS!!!!!!! That was the WORST day that we have EVER had in our lives! We nearly lost our dog to some stupid vet's stuff ups (stuff the $300 we had to fork up for all of this!). We have Huddy home now, and he's happy. Lets just say we had a VERY stiff drink last night-and I dont drink!!! What a horror experience! We will never be going back there again! His old vet is a bit more of a drive, but at least we know that they know what they're doing! Thanks for the chance to vent. :)

wowzer! Id be going for the long drive just so you can trust your vet!
I cant believe they looked down on you for not going down that path of specialist - it wouldnt have helped in the end anyway would it! And not every one is made of money!
Glad he is better today! We would be the same if something happened to Terah...

Believe me, if I had the cash I would spend a million if it meant that it would make him better- Im sooooo p***ed at that vet for making me feel like Im a bad mother to Huddy. He's my other baby, and he has been there by my side for the past 8 years. He's my shadow and Id be lost without him. It's making me teary just thinking about it! :crying: Thanks for the good wishes Bekkyboo- I really appreciate it. :hugs:

Hi,
Glad to hear he is okay did the vets advise you that you have to be careful of reoccuring bouts of pancreatitis, make sure you do not feed him any fatty meals, be careful around xmas people tend to throw them scraps and leftovers but once they have had it they can be prone to it again, did they send him home on a special diet?? because they usually do. Good luck I hope he makes a full recovery.

Thanks for the advice and good wishes Kelly-really appreciated. :hugs: We've decided that we are going to take him back to our old vet this week as we dont want anything more to do with the horror vet. My parents dog has had pancreatitis and he's on that special diet, but no- the horror vet didnt even mention it. Thanks for reminding me- it didnt even cross my mind! ooooops! I'll let you know how it all goes. Thanks again. :)

Thanks for the :hugs:-Huddy sends a big sloppy drool kiss xxxx
I can't beleive the horror vet even attempted to make a diagnosis until the BT results came back  Why worry you for nothing, that's terrible :shame: and then makes you feel bad for not having that much cash spare - who does have that sort of cash spare at this time of year? I certainly don't  ( at any time of year for that matter)
Glad things are ok now and Huddy doesn't have to endure that horror vet again!!
