Hi everyone,

Just looking for some reassurance I guess?

I visited my health fund today just to confirm my excess etc and they told me that I had been a member since the 22nd of December 2004. As I am sure you are all aware you need to be with a fund for 12 months to be covered for obstetrics.

In theory I should be fine as my little man is due on the 26th of Jan but what do you think the chances of him coming on or before the 22nd December are? (just over 1 month early)

This is my first pregnancy and from what I can gather from other posts it is not unusual to go over for your first?

I have been seeing a private obstetrician and am booked in to a private hospital.

I guess when it comes down to it if he wants to come out early I will be up for lots of $$$$ (all worth it in the end I am sure)

Any experiences/thoughts/opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Beck

I didnt go through the private system so i cant help you there, sorry. The thing that i can give you some assurance on is, yes the majority of first timers have their babies overdue! My DS was 10 days overdue and im sure everyone here will probably tell you that there first was late too. Hopefully some of the other girls will be able to help you with the private health fund matter.

Hi Beck,

I also went public so not of much help sorry!! But out of interest, I was 8 days overdue and he was my first.

With being 12 months in a fund, is that 12 months from the date you have the baby, or 12 months from when you start seeing your OB? Do they look at the date that you had the baby or the date that you started your OB visits??

Hi there. I have had private health insurance both times but the first time i went public. i was lucky i still got a private room which i am glad of as i was highly emotional and tired. The second time i went private was great as i had a fanitastic ob who came straight away from a party to do a caeser because i was haemoragging. I had been under cover for a year or more when i had my first. Second time round i was stressed about costs but you are pretty safe if you don't have top cover and go into a public hospital with private cover. I only paid an excess for my private room. Hope this helps but yes it is all worth it for the safe arrival of you baby. With both my pregnancies due to pre-eclamsia i started having contractions six weeks early on and off and the drs stopped them however both my babies were born early ethan 2 wks early and sheldon nearly 3wks early.

My guy was 2 weeks early. We also went public though, so I can't help you with the private cover. Sorry.

Hi,
Just wanted to let you know my first pregnancy my DS was due at the end of June - which was about a week after my 1 year private health insurance had been completed so I booked into a private hospital etc etc. I also enquired with my private health insurer what would happen if i went early and they told me I would be eligible to be a private patient in the public hospital sytem (as i was eligble for that after 9 months of private health insurance) I am not sure if all insurers are different or not or even now if things have changed.
Anyway I also booked into Royal Womens as a private patient in the public system (it meant I could still have my own OB and would be preferenced for a private room) This obviously is in QLD and I am not sure how the other states work.
The end of the story - I went 5 weeks early and had my DS at the public hospital got my own room and it was fantastic. Even have to say that the nurses at the Royal were better than the nurses I encountered when I had my DD in a fully private hospital).
I guess I would recommend speaking to your health insurer to find out what other options are available to you should you go early as a friend of mine also ended up having her baby in a private hospital when she was not fully covered and was out of pocket $6000 as the baby was premmie and needed special care.
best of luck

Hi there!

I was exactly one month early with my DS and he is my first. I didn't go private and my son was in NICU for ten days and I ended up in a private room as the lady I was with snored like an animal ;) , (lovely lady but I have never heard anything like it)
We didn't up paying a cent and the care was excellent.
I would check with your heath care provider before going to far with the private extras

I was told by our private health fund that its all based around your due date. If I had have gone early and not technically been covered, I would have been, cos bub wasn't "due" until the cover kicked in. IYKWIM.

Best to check with your fund.

I'm not covered by private, but I was under the assumption that you had to be in for 12 months before you fell pregnant??
I don't really know, but it's probably a good idea to call them and check.
