hey :)

I was hoping you guys could creatively solve my problems!!!

my parents are about to become grandparents for the first time... the drama is that DH's parents are already Grandma and Grandpa... and as I still have ALL of my grandparents... the other names

Nan and Pa
Nanny and Poppy (not 'real' grandparents... we just 'adopted' them!!!)
Grandma and Gramps

are taken too... I am at an end as to what bubs can call my parents??!!

My dad says that it is ok... that bubs can just call him 'Sir James' (my father has many issues :D ) but I would really like a better alternative :)

any ideas????

Do you have ancestry from overseas?

We got around a similar problem by using the words for my parents from my father's native language.

Omar and Opar is german for the grandparents and I think it sounds nice. We had the same problem too as MIL already was Grandma and FIL Pappa, but my Mum had her heart set on Grandma, so we just have two Grandmas, and my Dad is Grandpa so at least there is some difference in the couples! My Mum's dad was Dutch and we called him Poppa - I really like this and think it sounds very affectionate.

Sorry can't really help you but my FIL (his name is bob) decided he wanted to be called Grandbob  . Our kids just accept it the same as 'Grandpa' (my dad).

Why don't you just make something up? It'll give everyone a laugh when they are out in public together. :)

My daughter decided at 8 months that my MIL was "Nan-Nan" and it stuck lol so we have Nan-Nan & Poppy(inlaws), and Nanny & Poppy- (surname), my parents.

My dad and his partner will be Grandad and Nana, Husband's are already Grandma and Grandpa.

His system growing up was to call one set Grandad and Nana and the other Grandpa and Grandma. Meanwhile Mine was Grandad (Name) and Nana (Name).
It's good because my favourite person in my world was Grandad Pat and his was Snr to my dad, so my kids will have Grandad Pat as well :D

(I'm getting a little more careless with my secret id aren't I....)

We have four Nana's in our family and the kids don't get confused. My Mum is Nana Liz and DH's Mum is "Nana", my grandmother is Nana Jo and DH's grandmother is SuperNana. (The other two great grandmothers are Grandma and Oma).

My brother's children have 5 Nanas and one Oma - all four great grandmothers are alive. The Nana's are known by their first names, so there is Nana Liz, Nana Sally, Nana Jo, etc.

At the end of the day my personal view is that the grandparent gets to chose their own name, and if it is the same as that of another family member, so what? The kids will always know the difference because they are different people.

(BTW - The grandfather's in our family aren't so robust, but there is an Opa, a Grandpa and a Pop).

Hi

My MIL is "Nanno" as there were other "Nanna's" when the cousins were growing up.

My nephews call my parents "Anma and Pampa" - they couldnt pronounce Grandma & Grandpa so these variations just stuck. I also think Opa is lovely for a grandfather :D

I too still have all my nannas and my kids were the first grandkids and great grand kids on both sides. So we have" old nanny "who is my mothers mother and a very young 80 she thinks its funny???? Then we have " nan and Pa " even though pa has been dead for nearly 4 years my nan is still under the title of both names.
'
My mum is Nan and Stinky pete (her cats name) and my dad is Grampsman god knows where that came from

Hubbies mum is Grandma and her exes called poppy Werner.

Then we have my aunty who is 50 and had so much plastic surgery she can barely blink. She is fanatical about her weight and her looks and for some reason my kids have always called her "Big Nanny" which mum and I think is just too funny

My husband's Mum is already Grandma so my Mum has decided to be Nanna Bern (her name is Bernadette) and my husband's Dad is JohnPa (his name is John - probably stating the obvious - and he stuck Pa on the end - don't know where that comes from but it seems to work) so my Dad has decided to be Grandpa (but I will tell him about your GrandBob Mim -my Dad's name is Bob so maybe he would like to get his name in there like John has - I think that sounds pretty cool).

My parents have a friend who calls himself SuperDave to his grandchild -his explanation is that his name is Dave and he is on Superannuation - I think that's pretty funny.

We had the same problem, DH father wanted Poppy and so did my dad so we have two poppy's its actually less confusing for DS at the moment coz he only has to attempt to say the one word.
Even though DH's mummy is in heaven we still call her Nana and we also call my mum Nana too. If were talking about one in particular we do the "Nana sue" or "Nana Iris".

My mum refused to be called Grandma or nanny so we went with Bella (something i usually call her) and my dad is Doonie (he is irish and middle name is Doone as is jack's).

The inlaws are grandma/grandpa, they seem happy with the traditional!

My parents are Granma and Grandad, my Nana sometimes gets called Great-Nana by my son and nephew, but usually just gets called Nana.
DH's parents are Nana and Poppy...Dh's Grandma is still alive and hates being called Great-grandma by anyone, and she has alot of great grandkids.
We usually only add the 'Great' part on to avoid confusing DS when we are talking about one of them when they aren't actually there.

We still have many grandparents ourselves, so here's how it works in our family:

My grandma and pop are Old Granny Mary and Pop
My nana is nana
My mum and dad are Grandma and Grandpa
My M and FIL are Oma and Opa (German people)

Oma and Opa works really well. But to be honest I would just let them be what they want to be, even if it is ridiculous  . I don't think it matters too much, half the time the kids make up nicknames any way (Omi and Opi) ;)

We followed similar lines to Draught (Theresa). As children my brothers and I had "Nana with the Cat" and "Nana with the Dog". This was great as long as the pets lived! My children have Nana Bobbie (my mum) and Nana Carol (DH's mum). They also have my nana who has become Nana Bird (having a toy bird that sings impressed our son from an early age!). They got their heads around this very easily- it is a bit like having two children in a group with the same name, giving the last initial afterward the christian name. ie. Jane D and Jane T.

Sal-counting down in single weeks now!

This is something we still have to work out as i always thought that my children would be lucky enough to have Nanny and Poppy A (first letter of last name) and Nanny and Poppy B. As this would have been easier for us as children but both my Nannas and Pops both had surnames starting with M. and unfortunatly for my children they will have the same problem. We sort of have it all worked out as my Parents will be Nanny & Poppy and we are trying to find out the Aborignal words for Nanny & Poppy to call DH's Dad and Step Mum (his step mum is aborignal). I only have agreat Grandmother alive so she will be called Great Grandma W and DH's Grand parents will be Great Grandma & Grandpa M. We also have two very good friends who have asked if the can be Nanna J and Papa T which we have agreed to. Best of luck deciding i dont think it really matters all that much to the grandparents though as long as they get the hugs and kisses. :D

My kids have ...

Nana and Poppa (in-laws)
Grandad and Alyn (my dad and step-monster)
Nana Peggy (my step-nana)
Super Nana (dh's nana)
Nana Wil and Grandad Ryan (adopted grandparents) ... was surprised at thier choice of names as they are dutch.
Grandad Norkland aka as Billoo (my grandad in Auckland - rip)
and Mummy's mummy ... they never met her as she died 10 years ago this December ... my sister and I agreed to call her this as it was less confusing for the kids.
