I am not sure if this is the right section but anyways... :fingerscrossed:

My DD has lactose intolerance, as when she was a few weeks old (and topped up on formula) she would scream whilst feeding, had runny poo's and had a rash on her belly. I was told to try her on lactose free formula by my GP and that seemed to fix everything up (however she was never actually tested or anything for lactose intolerance).

They also said that most babies grow out of it by the age of one. She's 6 months old now and I decided to try her on a bit of baby custard to see if she has had any reaction, and so far so good  She had it today and yesterday, and nothing has changed yet...

So my questions are-
Was that the right thing to do?

Does that mean she's grown out of it?

And if so, should I change her formula now to non-lactose free?

Any help would be greatly appreciated :detective: :fingerscrossed:

Dear Billy,

While you have found the right section for your question, I can only provide you with very general advice regarding lactose intolerance – you would need to discuss this further with your doctor or a paediatric gastroenterologist.

It is positive that your little one has not reacted to the custard, but I would resist making large and sudden changes to her current low-dairy diet – particularly before she is one. If your daughter continues to manage the small amounts of custard well, gradually increase the amount she is having, to see if quantity affects her differently. From there, you might try a little bit of yoghurt or regular formula to see if there is a reaction. Do not suddenly change all of her formula feeds to regular formula.

When testing or challenging a bub’s diet for reactions, it is always a good idea to do this under the guidance of a medical professional and to only change or add one food at a time so that you can be clear about which foods affect your baby (if at all).
