Hi there Pinky!

I am feeding Ariene (6 months, one week) every 2-4 hourly daily and 2-3 times a night, from one breast each time, on demand. She is not on solids yet.

My querie is regarding the recurrent soreness in my right breast. It's often in the same general area each time- the side closest to the other breast - and feels like a blockage/some kind of inflammation. So I am often applying heat before a feed and massaging it during. Twice it has developed into mastitis requiring antibiotics (twice with my first baby too). Twice on this same breast I have had 'white spot' on the tip of the needle which has needed peircing with a sterilised needle to release the milk behind it. I also often get pain in, around and behind the nipple and deeper in this breast that feels like thrush. This soreness lingers from one feed to the next until it eventually dissapates. On those days I use an oral thrush treatment (Daktarin, I think it is) on my nipples prior to feeding. It seems to work for a little while.

I am getting weary of having an uncomfortable right breast- it feels as thought there is always something wrong with it. Sometimes feeding from that side is absolutley excruciating. I'm 99% sure that there are no attachement issues, she is getting a good mouthfull and is well positioned during a feed. I have never had any probs with the left and at this stage I feel strongly about breastfeeding my baby for a couple of years or until she self-weans.

I'd appreciate any advice that you have for me!

Kind Regards,
Emma

Hi Emma,
it sounds as though there is something happening that is lingering because it may not have been adequately treated previously.

Is there any clothing that could be pressing on this breast ie a tight bra? Have you tried nursing your baby in different positions to encourage the ducts on the sore side to drain more completely?

It would be wise to have a personal consultation with a lactation consultant for specific help. If for instance, the problem is candida ( thrush) you would need medication to nip it in the bud, just as you may for an ongoing mastitis.

Best of luck with sorting out this pain - it isnt something to 'put up' with. And also well done for persevering despite your discomfort.
