hey I'v been looking into drug free pain relief for my labour and the only one I'm having trouble finding information on is TENS (trans-cutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) all i know is this :(
TENS is a technique whereby electrodes are placed on the patients back near the spine and a small electrical current is passed through the electrodes and skin to stimulate nerves entering the spinal cord. It is believed that this stimulation results in the release of the bodies own endorphins (a nerve transmitter which results in pain relief) and thus can block pain transmission from the areas supplied by these nerves. It has been reported to produce pain relief :o in 20-24% of mothers and slight benefit in up to 60%, but is probably most useful in relieving back ache during labour. It is available at many obstetric centres but often patients must obtain their own electrodes (usually from the physiotherapy department) and along with lessons on how to use TENS and rental of a TENS machine, this costs about $40.00.
I know that's a bit but I'd still like to know a bit more if possible or even hear of your experiences with TENS....
Please help me out I'm totally nervous and would realy like to have a good look at my options.... Thank you :)
