I need some advice. I have had a bit of a shonky back most of my life - just that my hips are a bit twisted. It doesnt cause any pain or problems, but when its bad you can see my right foot slightly turn in when I walk (apparently).
Now that I'm carrying a load, my sciatic nerve is being pinched on the dodgy side - not when I walk but when I lie a certain way in bed and when I stand a certain way.
I havent been to a chiro in at least 7 years and guess I would probably need new x-rays cos mine are waaaaay old but I cant get new ones because I'm pregnant (at least I dont think I can?? ). Is it worth me going to the chiro to see what he can do or should I leave it? Because all of my muscles and ligaments are relaxing, I'm thinking any work he does on me might be in vain cos it might go out again.
Has anyone had any experience with chiro's during pregnancy?
help!

I have never seen a chiro
But I would recomend Osteopaths I love them, mine is my saviour and they do pregnancy massage as well.
Also if you don't mind needles Acupunture (sp)
I have had that too and that was amazing.

Hi,
I would recommend an Osteopath rather than a chiro, they work everything not just bones and disks..abit more intense! But you would have to check with them to see if they are ok to see while pregnant.
Hope it gets abit better for you!

I went to a remedial massuer the other day, make sure you tell them you are preggers....and its fine.
They release the muscles to help realign your pelvis and spine. I found it was great! I ached the next day, but then felt much better!
Good luck!!!

You know in Eastern culture; massages, acupunctures etc had have been used for hundred years including for pregnant women.
I had my “gentle” back massages during my pregnancy which done by the chiropractor it was splendid, so just ask whether your chiro will fix/remedy your back whilst u pregnant.

Hi Carls
I am currently seeing a chiro - I had been seeing him for about 8 months before I fell pregnant, and am still seeing him, (just once a month now). He explained many benefits of chiro for childbirth and to help with your back during pregnancy. But then again, of course I would be told the benefits right??? :)
I would check out any options that are recommended here, (this is my first pregnancy, so I certainly cannot honestly say if the chiro has benefitted me or not as I don;t know any better) and go with what you think would suit you best - both personally and financially.
A painful sciatic nerve though must be so annoying and awful - I have always called it my psychotic nerve as when is plays up it's drives you crazy!!

I saw a chiro throughout my entire pregnancy and still do now. I had severe sciatica throughout and found it to be most helpful. My hips were twisted too.
I to was told of the benefits and before I had my ds, I went and saw him 2 days before he was born. He told me I'd be in labour within 48 hours. All my bones had shifted into the correct spot and I gave birth 24 hours later in 2 hours and 20 mins.
If you in Brisbane, I can give you his name if you want to PM me.

I found gentle Yoga did wonders for my back.
Wonders for more than my back for that matter....but it's a back question...?!

I saw a chiro for a while that specialised in pregnant women and babies. I'd highly recommend finding one who specialises in this area. No need to see him any more because he fixed me all up :D (my back that is :o )

What she means is: Oh...and her back too....
Wasn't it 'shag's back' anyhow??

I wish I had known about this site when I was pregnant as I had sciatica and I went to the Docs complaining about it and she said well it will go away when you have bub you know! I think the part that annoyed me the most was how she said it

I went to a chiroprator throughout my pregnancy. The chiro said if everything is kept in line, that it's easier when you have a vaginal birth (I had a c-section  ) When it got to uncomfitable laying on my belly, then the chiro did my back while I sat up. She used low-force techinque's (make sure you don't get one of those that try and rip your head off) using something like a staple gun up and down my spine. My pelvis shifts due to my tail bone which hits the seat whenever I shift.
Also, consider Bowen therapy which is more for muscles. I love it. :)

I also started seeing a chiropractor before conceiving - one who specialises in working with pregnant women. She said it is really important to have everything lined up properly because things get worse throughout pregnancy and can make labour more difficult. I only see her about once a month now, but am hoping it will make a difference. My hips were twisted too (that explains why the back zip of my skirt always ended up in the front!! :o) and she uses wedges under my hips to realign them.. very gentle. But I know massage can help with that too.
I also can't speak highly enough of Osteopaths, but the ones I went to could never get my back to crack and sometimes it really just needed a good crack!! :)

I didn't seeing a chiro until after my son was born, I wish I had been before as it would have completley changed my birth. However she completely changed my life - I am not joking.
I didn't really like chiros - the whole back-cracking thing very off putting, but Tracey is holistic and gentle. She even noticed my daughters jaw (growing wonky) and diagnosed the problem correctly with no xrays.
Find one you like and you won't regret it

I would recommend seeing an Osteopath. If you live in Sydney I can recommend an excellent one who's speciality is pregnancy.

Thanks for all your advice ladies! I will call the chiro today and see what they say. Getting everything in line in time for birth sounds good to me.
My sciatic nerve actually went last night while I was in bed and I couldnt move for a good 20 minutes - I was in so much pain I was crying! But I forced myself up (with the help of dh rolling me like a beached whale) and today it feels much better.
Cosmic - I've always wondered why the back of my skirt ends up at the front! Is it really because my hips are twisted?

hi all,
this is my first post, and i couldn't resist this one.
I'm due in March and I am a chiropractic assistant. Chiro has been unbelievably helpful both before and during the pregnancy.
it was the only thing that gave me an appetite during the first trimester. It's fantastic!!
I work for and see a gonstead chiropractor, and couldn't recommend it more!
as for x-rays, if you have old ones, it is a good place to start. you wouldn't get re-xrayed at this point, but the old ones are helpful.
good luck!
