Hey girls,

Strange question but is anyone using an implant as a form of contraception? and if so has anyone had any nasty side effects?

I'm thinking of having one put in, but have heard some bad things about the side effects.

I'm not ready for any accidents, so I need to make a decision.

Hey Karen!

I don't have the implanon myself but work at a Medical Ctr where I've seen a few different things.

1. Constant Bleeding
2. A few Pregnancies

I personally wouldn't get one but there might be some other girls that could give you a raving review.

Have you heard of a Mirena? Its a sort of IUD..lasts the same amount of time & because you've had a pregnancy you'd be eligable.

I hope you get opinion from the other side of the fence. :hugs:

The Inplant last for about 3years i had it in for a year and a half, in that time i put on 20 kilos! they say that u may have increase in ur weight hmmm yeh if i new it was going to be that much i wouldnt of got it in for sure! Also i bled for a month at a time with a 2 week break then back to the month again! Constant craps and moodiness! But i didnt get pregnant!
This was how the inplant affected me but could be different for u but i wouldnt risk putting on 20kilos if i was u!

Like i said that was how it affected me u could be different!

Got to go its thunder and lighting:thumbsdown:

well i had my implant for 3 years (mind you i had to pay it myself- $600.- then...otherwise i wouldnīt have had it that long LOL)
anyway-
i didnīt get pregnant, although i am VERY fertile
i had constant bleedings and was VERy moody
i gained weight, yes, but i just ate too much ummm :(- it could have to do with the hormones- so be aware

otherwise it was great and i really mean that

it did work, i couldnīt forget it.....

all the best

hi there I'm not from here but noticed your question,

I've not had any side effects I used to spot for about a week and currently dont have a period... with the weight gain issue from my experience if you tend to gain weight easily during pregnancy you will more than likely gain on the implanon, I understand not wanting surprises... there is only one reason for pregnancy on the implanon either they were pregnant and werent checked for being pregnant before having it in serted or it wasnt checked that it was actually inserted (in otherwords it wasnt actually put in and probably fell on the floor just before it was meant to be put in) I'm about to have mine removed not due to any dislike to it but we're wanting to extend or family soon and as I dont have a period at all I wouldnt have a clue as to ow soon I'd be o'ing etc but I've been told it only takes 48hrs to leave your system when its removed.

Just wanted to give you something else to think about. No my info about gaining weight isnt scientific but I know about 18 maybe 20 girls who've had one and most have taken it out for bleeding and have gained weight (but as I said had tended to gain weight during pregnancy)
sorry if TMI but with the Mirena they have to dialate your cervix to put it in though it does last five years... I tend to have issues down there after birth so I chose not to go that path but most I know seem very happy with this option.
so there is my story hope it helps your decision... I'd talk to your GP about your options though.

My friend had an implant recently. No probs so far, just a sore arm from where they put the implant. They put it in the arm she uses most to carry her 1 year old.

 Hi i had it put in when DD1 was about 4 months old and had no probs,at first a little spotting, but nothing I would worry about. After the first week it settled down and I had it taken out when we started trying with DD2.Fell pg first go!It's prob not for everyone but this was my experience.I thought it was great as i always would forget the pill.My friend has just had hers removed as her DH had a vasectomy, but her DS is the same age as my DD1(just turned 3)and she had it in all this time with no probs.I think some women do get breakthrough bleeding, but I didn't.

Hi I have actully had the implant a few times now.
It can really depend what time in your cycle it is implanted as to some sight effect esp bleeding so beware if any doctor says he can put it in anytime!
It is best to be inserted on the first day of bleeding. You can also fall preg in the first few weeks if it isnt inserted at the right time.
I have had no real probs... the first time I had it put in I was quite emotional for the first few weeks due to the hormones and the 2nd time I bled very lightly for 3 weeks but other than that I have had no bleeding at all (Which is nice for a change!)
I didnt notice any weight gain or other Side effects etc
The doctor did tell me that the weight gain is quite smalar to that of the pill so if you put on weight from that you are likey to from the implant.
Best to talk to your doctor as he/she will be able to tell you the sight effects you personaly may have.

I love the implant though, I always forget to take the pill and with this it doesnt hurt, takes 5mis to put in then you can forget about it for a few years!!

Definately good and bad for diff people though just like all forms of contraception but if it doesnt work for you you can take it out at anytime. I also fell preg after having mine out for only a few weeks so fertility comes back very quickly.

I tried the implant some years ago and vaguely remember having to wait until a certain stage of my cycle to have it put in.

I had it removed again after 5 months of constant bleeding. Though i would guess they would have made some improvements to it in the past 4/5 years so they may be less side effects now.
