NO NO NO NO NO. That hospital is home to more drug addicts than the whole of brisbane. I have never had a child there but used to take sick friend up there for treatment - sometime middle of the night and I was disgusted. I heard from many social workers how they wouldn't take a dog into that place after the way their clients were treated.

Sorry Jenny but I have to agree. I have two friends who work at Logan Hospital and I'd certainly have her steer clear if she has any choice at all.
Another friend of mine gave birth there and left with the baby that night as she didn't want to stay there.
I don't have first hand experience but this is just what I have heard.
The Mater public would be about 15-20 minutes away via the freeway - a much better option if possible.
whoa! thanks for the response guys - I will suggest the Mater...

Definatly NOT the Logan!!!
My sis had her bub there, she was very young and planning on having him adopted out, they left her in the birthing rooms for 3hours then when mum went and found someone they said she could just pack her stuff up and go home  That was almost 6yrs ago now, but I have heard that the place is still the same.
I had DS at the Mater Mothers Public, and am going there again. They were fantastic, but I have heard bad things about there too...

I have worked in the maternity area at the Logan Hospital in 1998 and 2004, and would like to mention the fact that after the Royal womens (RBWH), they have the second highest number of babies delivered each year - yes, even more than the Mater. Its true that the Logan area houses a diverse range of people - indigenous, multicultural, predominately younger and also with a variety of social issues including alcohol/drugs, unemployment, domestic violence and a lower socio-economic status.
Having said that, I met great social workers, midwives, doctors including obstretricians (who also work at Logan, Sunnybank and Mater private) and the allied health staff are great (however a visit to the A&E may not always reflect this, I admit, I worked there too and it gets very busy!). I know a few friends that had their babies there and reported a good experience, however I had my baby privately. The facilities are pretty average and most women share a four bed bay and facilities, so it can get noisy with lots of visitors.
Another option for your friend to consider is Redlands Hospital - they do deliveries in the public system and depending on where your friend lives, may be closer than the Mater.
I've met women who have had their babies at the Mater, public and private and like all hospitals, have heard mixed reports, due to busy, overstretched midwives etc.
I hope your friends pregnancy goes well Z:)

We had our first son at Logan in 2003 and I can not fault the hospital. We only had a fantastic time, they were great, very supportive in my choice to bottle feed.
But then my girlfriend went there six months later and she had a completely different experience. She didn't enjoy her time there at all.
But it doesn't mean it's a bad hospital.
I had my second bub at the Royal Womens (because we'd moved to the north side of Brisbane) and again the majority of the nurses and doctors were great, but I encountered one doctor and one nurse who weren't very nice at all.
It would be the same most places I would assume...
