Hi,My daughter is almost 5 months old, and I started her on solids a couple of weeks ago. She has pureed fruit and vegies which I prepare myself, I'm just not too sure how much I should be giving her for each meal?I started as per the amounts recommended for rice cereal (1 tbspn, increased to 2 tblspns), and she now has 2 ice-cube size pieces (defrosted of course!), at each meal. She seems to finish it really quickly and always wants more, how much should she have? Each meal is accompanied by a 180ml bottle of formula, and her in-between bottles are 240mls. Thanks!

Dear Danielle13,

As your bub isn’t even 6 months of age yet, it’s very important that the formula continues to be her primary source of nutrition. She should still be having approximately 120mL of formula / kg of body weight each day.

So as long as the amount of formula your bub has each day isn’t decreasing as a result of eating more solids, you should be fine to gradually feed your bub more purees as she gets older and hungrier. Young tummies can sometimes have trouble digesting solid foods, so continue to feed her very simple purees and introduce new foods slowly.

Babies are very good at knowing when they are hungry and when they have had enough. Watch your little one carefully for signs that she is full – the younger the bub, the harder it is for them to clearly express ‘full’ signs such as turning their heads away or pushing away the spoon.
