Hi all,

I'm new to this thread (just found it) and I would like to as you all a question.

Kaiden (4mths) is on SMA and it is suppose to fill him up. Well, its not and I'm not sure whether to put him on solids.

The formula can says he should have 5 feeds of 240mls per day, but he wants 7-8. And he sucks the bottle dry each feed. I don't particulary want to put him on solid food, but am a bit worried he's hungry.

Any suggestions?

Maybe you could try him on some farex.

My daughter started waking more at night around 4 mths and wanted a bottle every time.I started her on farex once a day and it seemed to help.I think she just needed something extra.

But if you don't want to start him on solids just yet I'm sorry i don't have any other ideas.

Hope all goes well. :)

Firstly are you sure he is hungry. will he settle if he doesn't have the botltle? It seems like a lot of milk even for a hungry baby. Could it be tummy ache from too much milk making him think he is hungry?? Just a thought
If he is hungry I would get the farex out also. I started my son on solids around this age when he too was wanting more milk (about 6 180mls instead of 5. He is almost 1 and just manages to get through 240 mls sometimes)
Its completly up to you - just be aware that he may not take to solids just yet and if he does there may be no stopping him, he may want more than the one solid meal a day very fast

I'm certain he's hungry. He won't settle at all if I don't give him a bottle. I don't just give him his formula either. I have given him water since day one and he takes 120ml per day. I tried to stretch out his feeds with more water as the Dr thinks I'm over feeding him, but if he doesn't want it, he doesn't suck.
He is in proportion too. He is 7.9kg and 67cm long, so isn't overweight

I tried him on farex this evening. I couldn't get it in his mouth fast enough. Gave him 2 teaspoons mixed with formula and then he drank a bottle with 180mls, so we'll see how he sleeps tonight.
Fingers are crossed...

thanks for your input

hey mel

how did kaiden sleep after having the farex? i understand u luke is a pig to and still at nine months is having more bottles than required but he is in proportion and he also wont settle without a bottle and he also has water... i cant stretch them out anymore to give him less... i started luke on farex at 4 months too
and also with the SMA it didnt work for luke it didnt keep him full but the nan gold did seem to keep him fuller than the sma...

hope he is well

Hi all,

Had a decent sleep last night. Sleeped from 7pm to 4.30am, so a big improvement. He doesn't seem to be so grumpy either, so maybe he just needs a little more than most babies. He had farex with mushy apple and pear and sucked it off spoon like a vaccum. He must just be a hungry boy..

my DS was the same, even from birth he was chugging down a litre of formula (8-10 100ml bottles) now at 9 months he still drinks more than the tin suggests (4 x 220ml)

but he is a healthy weight, height and a lovely happy baby

dont worry about bub getting fat, they will not overfill themselves...and if they do it will soon come back up

a lot of people think formula fed bubs will end up fat but i have seen plenty of bubs that are breastfeed that are chubby too, so dont worry.

i just feed on demand as if he was breastfeed, as much or little as he wanted

also i started solids at 4 months and this also helped, mainly in the morning as he was asleep all night with no food so i think he was a bit hungrier then.

alll the best

Neither of my kids held out until the recommended 6 months before starting solids. I think that some babies are just ready before others and although 6 months is ideal, it is like most things and will suit only a percentage of children.

Bella was 4 months old and I couldn't stand the upset hungry baby any more and I tried her on solids and she had no problem eating them. Her tongue action was right and she took to eating large amounts of veges and baby rice from early on. She still drank all of her bottles so she must have been very hungry!

Daniel was only 3 months when the same thing happened! Mind you, being big at birth he had had a huge appetite from the beginning. It was only a few weeks after starting solids before he was having a bottle and then a big plate of veges afterwards at every meal as well as the bottles in between!

Both of them are still really big eaters and yet they are quite slim children. They are incredibly active and don't seem to put on weight very quickly.

Bella is 4 ½, 14.1kg and 107cm tall
Daniel is 2 ½, 13.5kg and 101cm tall

If your little one needs to have some solids to help him sleep and is taking them well without his tongue pushing them back out of his mouth... go for it, he is probably ready!

I believe that if a baby is hungry its for a reason. I dont honestly think it matters at this age on how much they really do have. Of course you have to watch that he's not getting too much! :D You have to remember that in the first year of life there's heaps of growth spurts. Everytime they go through one they get hungry. I started jayden on soilds at 4 months because he wanted it. He absolutely loved getting more than just milk. I realise that you dont want to do that but maybe he's telling you that he wants more variety. Unfortunately, babies quickly learn that theres more to life than just milk! :D

my daughter was the same she is only 7weeks but has been having farex since she was around 3weeks. she started of with one teaspoon mixed with her milk in the mornings, then at around 4-5weeks i started giving her 2 teaspoon in morning then the afternoon... in the last week i started trying her on heinz jar foods only 2 teaspoon pureed ones such as golden vegetable mash, pureed pears and banana, im sure some people think im crazy because the jars says from 4months, but some baby i think just wants more food as long as you dont over feed them, she weights 4.7kgs which doctor said she is a good weight, since i have done this she is much more happy and sleeps better,
