my cat has been bleeding from her rear end a couple of time in the last few months. i was wondering is it like our af? or is she having fun with another cat? she is about 5 years old and isn't desexed as we wanted her to have kittens eventually.

Cats do get there periods when they are on heat,But I would take her to the vet if she has not done this before as there may be something wrong. It really depends on if she is bleeding from her bottom or vagina?

Hi Belinda,

Has it happened to her before now? I mean, if it was her AF, she probably should have had it when she was younger too, KWIM? That's probably what it is though, providing it's coming out from the right 'bit' :D.

And i would think if you were going to let her have kittens, do it soon, as she will get a bit old if you leave it much longer. Why do you want her to have kittens may i ask?

i am pretty sure she is bleeding from her female bits. we just moved recently and there are a few other cats in the new neighbourhood. she had it once ages before we moved but now she has had it twice since we have been here. we wanted her to have kittens on the hope that it would settle her down and gentle her a bit as she can be a bit tempermental at times. we did try several years ago when she was in heat and there was a male cat at our old house but she wouldn't let him get close enough (tease). actaually now that i think of it she hasn't been in heat for a while now. maybe we will have kittens soon :D

Hi,
cats are different to dogs and us they do not have a period as such they go into heat and when a male mates with them he has spines on his penis that tears the uterus and makes her ovulate, so bleeding from there is not normal and should be checked out could be a urinary problem, if you want to mate her you should do it soon as she will be getting to old to mate soon. Hope this helps, I am av et nurse by the way

Ah, that's right, i forgot about the old 'spines on the penis'!! :D Maybe you might have kittens soon Belinda! If she is preggers, you'll notice her boobies getting bigger before anything else, that's how i knew mine was (she was only 8 1/2 months old and i didn't know she'd even been in heat yet, she showed no signs ). A couple of weeks later, kittens :D!

Didn't do much to settle my cat down (i think that might be a myth), but you can try i suppose!

I would go get her checked anyway, just to be sure. You'd kick yourself if it turned out to be something else....

I agree.
I think its a bit of a selfish stupid reason actually. get her desexed. there are too many homeless animals out there.

Hi,
I am a vet nurse and there are so many myths out there is regards to desexing of dogs and cats, you should let them have a season as it helps them mature(untrue), you should let them have a litter(untrue), Desexing changes their personality (untrue) there are so many positive reasons to have your animal desexed, not only do you help reduce the number of unwanted animals that are euthanased each year there are numerous health reason, for female dogs it eliminates the chance of getting pyometra an infection of the uterus that if not treated can kill, if done at a young age it can prevent mammory cancer, you also do not have to put up with animals bleeding all over your house, for males it helps stop aggressiont owards other dogs and helps stop prostate problems and eliminates testicular cancer, for cats stops females screaming and trying to get out helps prevent fighting etc so as you can see there are so many benefits to sterilising and very few down sides.

a couple of other things too cats can catch sexually transmitted disease and
i regret letting my cat have kitten even after i got her desexed she used to bleed quite badly while urinating
i took her to the vet worried it was a disease or infection and found out that it was because the male cats had destroyed her insides

yes with cats mating is very aggressive the male has spines on his penis that tear the uterus which induces ovulation, large cats are often killed during mating due to the female fighting to get away and having her neck broken not a pleasant experience.

i think its really wrong for any cat (other than those owned by registered breeders) to be allowed to have any kittens. the cat haven in perth have to put down 3000-4000 cats per year. its just selfish for pet owners not to sterilise their animals.
sorry to be grumpy but i love cats and feel very strongly about this issue!
