Hi there,

Our first baby is now one week old and still hasn't done a poo. I am a little worried even though other people have said it's ok. She is feeding well and does plenty of wee's. Has anyone else experienced this (or longer) with thier babies.

Thanks to anyone who can put our nervous minds at ease.

HIDicko,

Are you breastfeeding? Cause b/f babies can go up to 10 days without pooing and that is perfectly normal.

Look I'm not an expert but I know this - if that were my child I would be concerned and I would talk to someone just to make sure its normal. Maybe there is a CHN nearby you can have a chat to - they are usually great for these types of concerns
Is the baby happy - no pains in the belly or anything?

Thanks! Similarly to this forum, we have had conflicting advice regarding this. I am breastfeeding, and the bub is happy most of the time. She seems to get some tummy pains some of the time. She passess wind regularly though!

I guess we will just have to wait and see. We plan to see the CHN later this week.

Thanks for your advice.

Hi, i know how scary it is when things doesnt happen they way that we think they should. My DS when he was little did the same thing. The longest he went without nothing was 14 days!! Is your bub breastfed? They told me that it was normal for breastfed bubs to take a while to do anything. Apparently they worry when a bottlefed bub doesnt do anything. Did your bub get rid of the meconium (black poo) at birth? Its really important that they do get rid of the meconium as it can make them very sick. If your concerned about anything you should try and consult your gp or health nurse, as they have a better understanding of everything. I hope this helped ease your mind a bit. :D

When I was breastfeeding The Princess, we were told not to worry if she didn't seem to poo much - because poo's are the body's waste, right? And breastmilk is made by you, specifically for your bubby, so if there's no waste, that just means the bubby is using all those nutrients in your milk.

Having said that, all babies are different - The Princess didn't poo for the first couple of days, but then after that it was Squirty McMustard every couple of days!!

If you're really worried, like other people have said, just go see the midwife/CHN/doc.

And just wait 6 months or so, until you've started bubby on solids - THEN you'll be fondly reminiscing about the early "no-poo" days....!!!! :D
