I am sorry to thread crash, but I really need to say this.
I have never lost a baby or had a miscarriage so I can not begin to understand what anyone is going threw.
BUT PLEASE PLEASE, no matter your blood test results, not matter whether you feel you have lost your baby INSIST you have a ultrasound before you consider a d&c or accept the prognosise.

Not too many years ago around the 7 week mark, my sister started to bleed. It was bright red and VERY painful. She thought for sure she had miscarried. But never the less her HPT'S still came back positive after the bleeding stopped 2 days later.. Then at 14 weeks she started to have a massive bleed, so much the docs admitted her to hospital saying that this was a new pregnancy (she knew she never miscarried the first time) and it was eptopic. So they booked her in for a d & c. My sis refused and said she was still pregnant. The doc sent a councelor (sp) in to talk to her about her loss. In the end, to shut my sis up they sent her for a scan to confim her miscarriage AND LOW AND BEHOLD, THERE WAS A HEALTHY 14 WEEKS OLD FETUS, HEART THUMPING AND ARMS FLYING. He is now my gorgeous nephew. They could never explain the bleed and honestly my sis doesnt care because she has her little man. I dont want to raise hope in hopeless situations but it can happen..

Sorry just had to share............

These days it would be very rare for them to not do an U/S prior to a D&C.

That said, it is good advice all the same.

I think most of the time they do a scan before hand, but if bubs is around the 5/6/7wk mark its hard to tell if there has been a missed m/c or not as the heart doesn't start beating till around 6wks, so you can have a scan when you think your around 7wks but really you could be 6wks and the heart hasn't actually started yet iykwim, its a very tricky tricky time, I have heard of so many not choosing to have a d&c after a m/c and then 7mths later give birth to a healthy baby, I never knew any of this till after I had a d&c in 2003, and I often wonder, with my last m/c i just decided to let nature take its course just in case

I've had a few m/c's now and most have been early days but I've always insisted on hcg counts.
This is another way of ensuring all is well:-)
That is a really scary story though!!

Good advice.

I had a scan done when I had my miscarriage, I would have insisted on one either way!

In September this year I went to another DR just to check that there was no heart beat because my ob said that his machine wasn't the best!! I was doubtful and even to this day I still am. the second scan I had was very good and they couldn't find the heartbeat, but never know.

I would insist on it as well!!! Very important to do so every machine is different as is all sonographers.

Good Idea!

My friend had a huge bleed when she was 14 weeks was in hospital for 2 days and the Dr's said there was not need to have a D&C as there was so much bleeding it would of been a full M/C no scan no nothing and we are both nurses we should of know better and Made them do one well 6 weeks later she was feeling sick thats when we found out there was a healthy but very small baby in her tum she lost the babys twin....
We are so glad that she had so much bleeding and the Dr didn't want her to have the D&C or her little baby wouldn't be here today..
