Hi I am probably being silly but is it normal for a newborn (9 days old) to basically feed and have a dirty nappy straight up?

What has been happening since my milk came in is that everytime my ds feeds its almost like my milk is going straight through him.

Example tonight I started feeding him at 11.30pm and by 12.15am I had changed his nappy 3 times.

I keep changing his nappy because he has such a sore little bum from all the pooy moments and I'm trying to stop it from getting any worse.

I only ask because I don't remember what it was like with my dd.

Thanks in advance

Kirsten

Hi Kirstlea

Yes little babies do poo lots - although it varies from baby to baby, newborns have very tiny tummies and so if they have mummies with a really good milk supply they will be pooing fequently. -it isnt the food you are giving 'going straight through' but the action of feeding that will be stimulating 'other end'.

You will probably find you have a baby who has good weight gains - and he will settle - it is also common after a couple of months ( give or take) for breastfed babies to go several days between poos.

Meanwhile use a good baby barrier cream on his little bum and stay away from perfumed products and wipes that maye also irritate your babys delicate skin.
