DS is 4 now but was 9 weeks prem (1260grams)

I know eyesight problems can be common in prems and I'm a bit concerned lately about his sight. Ive booked him in at the optometrist to get them checked on tuesday but im just worried how accurate the testing would be as he is only just 4 so I think an eye test like an adult would do is too hard, I know they do it differently for children but just worried about how accurate it will be!

I notice he needs to be VERY close to letters to read them despite knowing them all brilliantly and often he will look at pictures and say something is there that is not and then he gets closer to it and says 'oh yeah its not a .... its a .... (something totally different but what is actually in the picture)

Sometimes its silly things that make me worry but my left eye is basically useless and was only discovered to be as a child because I had a ponytail on the top of my head that one day went in front of my eye and I commented to my dad that I hoped it wouldn't do that at school as I wouldnt be able to read... so I know 'silly little things' can actually show a big problem

Has anyone elses prem had eyesight problems? Can they be fixed?

Sorry i can't help you with your questions about premes but my DD recently had her eyes checked.
If your DS knows his letters then they will probebly uses letter charts but otherwise they do have charts with pictures aswell. I had only just had my eyes tested so I noticed there wasn't much difference between the 2 tests. The only differance (apart from DD not needing glasses) was DD didn't have the test where they puff air into your eye (can't remember what its for:confused: )
Hopefully all goes well with your DS eye test, its much better to pick up any problems before they start school.
Good luck

Most optometrists have an auto refractor that can allow an instrument to see if there is any error in the vision.

Thanks for the replies, he had his sight tested today and apparently he is long sighted. They decided that this year we don't need to do anything but in 12 months he is to be retested and will be given glasses in time for school.
