View Full Version : DIY fitted nappies advice needed
I am interested in making some fitted nappies but am a bit confused on materials.
Is it right that you need a PUL material as the outer cover? Where can you purchase this from?
If you dont use PUL do you need to have a waterproof cover to go over the top?
What is the best materials for the lining and for the padded insert?
Any advice would be greately appreciated, THANKS
I use fitteds that I use a wool cover over but if you want an all in one nappy or pocket it will need PUL. I don't make nappies but I know you can buy PUL fom nappiescovered.

you can get some cute PUL prints from bumble bee nappies too, just google.
Some good fabric for the inside are
Sherpa
Suede Cloth
Microfleece
And for the outer you can use PUL, or Malden Mills fleece, which is water repellant and pill resistant. You can get MM Fleece from the Wee Wuns in nappy cuts.
just make sure the nappy cuts you get are big enough for your pattern, they tend to change in size.
I'm still a nuby, but have made a lot of pockets out of mostly MM fleece, with all of the linings mentioned, but we haven't tested them yet.
Oh and soaker fabric for the stuffers:
Hemp Terry or Hemp Fleece - hemp is the most absorbent, anti bacterial etc
Cotton Terry
Microfibre for extra boosters

if you put a layer of pul on the outer of the nappy, it would be considered an aio - all in one. this means that the nappy has all the absorbant layers and doesn't need a cover, because the pul acts as the cover.
if you didn't use pul then it would be considered a fitted, and you would need a pul or wool cover to go over the top. you can buy both types ready made, or make your own pul cover, or wool cover out of woolen fabric or a knitted woolen cover (known as a soaker, or if it has legs like pants then its known as longies).
you basically want to have a layer next to bubs that will "wick" moisture through so bubs isnt sitting on a wet nappy. this layer can be microfleece or suedecloth, both available online at nappiescovered, someone above has posted the link.
next you want absorbent layers to soak up all the wee. these can be made from cotton (flannelette, towelling, sherpa), hemp (hemp fleece, hemp french terry) which is very absorbant, or microfibre (very absorbant also but needs a layer between it and bubs cause it will strip the moisture from bubs skin otherwise!). you can also use any bamboo fabric if you can get your hands on it! some of these fabrics you can get at spotlight (flannelette, towelling) but most are found online.
the outer layer can be anything - most people use a cute patterned fabric like flannelette, or a textured fabric like sherpa or towelling.
fyi, fitteds don't generally have an insert - you might be thinking of pockets. everything is in the body of the fitted nappy already - some have boosters which sit inside the nappy to give more absorbancy, but this should be just adding to an already absorbant nappy.
hope that helps!

oops sorry I've just reread your post, and you're wanting to make fitteds. That means you would make the nappy out of absorbant fabric, and then put a cover over the nappy, which you can make out of wool, fleece, or PUL

I made 2 fitted nappies. They las her 3 hours and this was the composition.
Pattern - Tea Lady's one (thanks)
I used 1 layer of Polar Fleece Outer(spotlight stuff)
For the Inner i used 1 layers of Flannelette, on the middle layer i attatched the SOAKER material.
SOAKER - 1 x BB Hemp Booster Pad and covered that with 1 microfibre (Big w bought) cloth.
I sewed it onto the middle piece and then sewed it together.
Oh, the other one i made the soaker inside piece was 3 layers of flannelette ( 20cm long x 15 wide ish)with microbibre sewn on top.
These are probably a little unconvential but the materials were cheap and the nappy works.
Goodluck
