Hehe bleach is good O's Mum :) U wicked!

we always have fresh flowers in the house so my remedy is mix of water and sugar, and cut the end of the stems now and then to make them last longer...

NO!!! I'm serious!!!
I actually remember bleach as being one of the life extender thingies..in fact I think I recall an add for Domestos showing putting a bit in a vase of flowers!! Where the heck is Deb when you need her!!!

Found this on google: "Flower extender"

Take Time to Smell the Roses - Cut Flower Enhancer, Extender Recipe #114031
This mixture is just as good if not better then those little packets you get when you buy cut flower. Add this to you home grown cut flowers to enjoy ondoors.
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1 tablespoon sugar
2 drops bleach

O's mum is right. I worked in a rose greenhouse one summer (heaven) and we always added a bit of bleach to the buckets that the cut roses were put into.

Hubby suggested Viagra as a joke but i remember Dr John Darcy saying something about this on Sunrise a couple of months ago. If you can get your hands on some, it could be worth a try.

What you do is this (taught to me by my florist friend many years ago):

- add some "extender" to the vase water - about 1 tsp bleach and 1 tsp sugar
- trim the stems a little every few days
- every few days lie them flat in (depending on size) a bath/laundry tub with enough water in it for them to float. This way the water can creep up the stems, without gravity to hinder it.

If I won lotto, I'd have fresh flowers in every room, and have them changed weekly......ahhhh....... :)

Hey ya Nickster, nah you don't have to win lotto for fresh flowers, do you have florist called "Bloom" at your shopping centres? They sell great flowers for as low as $AUD5 per bunch. Thats where I got my weekly from. I love their Tulips collections.

My local shopping centre florist has REALLY small bunches or singles for that amount ($5), which I love, but I was talking BIG!! Bunches in every room, even the loo!! Scented, unscented, masses of colour, singular colours, small arrangements, big arrangements, but I need the appropriate house first (many rooms for my many bunches), which is also why I must win lotto!!!
Thanks for the tip though!! You're very kind!! :)

Ohh for THAT kinda bunch, you need to order them through Roses Only which I got them on regular basis from DH ie Valentine's Day, Birthday, Anniversary (3 types anniversary: the day we met and the day we got engaged and the day we got married), some bad news he brought home for example he had to go for business meeting to New York for 4 days so me and Thomas had to stay at home bohoo...which I didnt mind as I love fresh flowers...

And nah you dont want fresh flowers at every room! My old man reckoned its bad for yer health!

TM is that because of the old Irish lore about the wee 'uns hiding in the folds of the petals and leaves and causing mischief?
Wasn't it disallowed from hospitals once upon a time?

I may be wrong but I thought bleach was for roses specifically.
Cut the stems and change the water regularly. If there are very woody stems you bash them at the end a bit to help them uptake water.

**Note to self, buy flowers to shame dp***
