Hi girls,

Had to take DS to pedistrian to for his first check up today. He is 13mnths old and weighs 9kg (10% on baby book scale and thats good since he has been 3% for a while). He always has been a small baby. I have never thought there is anything wrong with him, I beleive that he is just going to be small. He was fully b/f till 12mnths and i make all of his food. Both sides of the family are small framed, so what are his chances of being small.....

He is mentally and physically healthy and if anything advanced, just doesn't gain weight to quicky. He eats all day long and is always on the go, so i think he just burns energy fast.

I'm just starting to get tired of his father (not together) and others making such a big deal about it. I'm going to these specialist appt to just confirm that he is fine. I have a dietrian appt coming up to make sure what i'm giving him is right.

Is anyone else in the same boat?

My friend has 2 big baby's and gets the oppisite... 'What do you feed them'... People just cant be happy... If there not making comment about one thing is another!

9kg doesnt sound like a bad weight for a 13 month old to me... I've got one big bub, one average and one small...

Big bub is 4 months and 8kg
Average bub turned 1 being 10kg and at 16 months is 11kg
Little bub turned 2 weighing 10kg and at 4 is 13kg

They're all very different and so long as hes gaining weight theres no worrying really!

I really would not worry. My DD is 11 months and weighs 10.5kg yet everyone comments on how thin she looks. My brothers DD was 8kg at her first birthday and now she is three and perfect, just a little framed girl! Those graphs should be removed, just freak you out.

Cupcake - OMG i hope that is when she was 13mnths and not born!

Charmzy - your baby's are definetly different

The thing is with those graphs, they take 100 babys born on the same day and thats how they get there figures.

Who's to say if they are fully b/f or on the bottle (big difference i think) if there food is made for them or canned etc (not that i have a problem with any of that, i know my cousin refuses to eat fresh food)

If they want to do these graphs, i think they need to take into consideration on what the child is bought up on!

Yep people are never happy:no:
DS was born big just over 9 pounds but it took him until 18mths to reach 10kg.
Personally I don't think what type of milk they have makes that much difference its more genetics. DS was FF from 2 weeks and my sisters DD1 was BF until 3years and was almost 13kg at 12mths.

My DS was 9.3kgs at 12months (I bottlefed him and made his food) I thought that was pretty normal am, I wrong??
Ignore what the charts say and everyone hassling you about his weight, so long as he is healthy and eating well thats all that matters.
He might just grow in spurts.
Xavier went from 9kgs at 12months to nearly 12kgs at 18months old!!

Oh and with the charts, somone has to be at the bottom and someone has to be at the top LOL!!

I personally think charts are a complete waste of time no matter how you look at it.
Each child is sooo different (whether it be by their genetics or diet or lifestyle) and "normal" doesn't exist as there are too many variables to fit on one chart!!!

I'm sure your son is just fine, but by all means see a specialist if it will ease your mind and keep people quiet and off your back  !!

Cupcake I have seen picks of you I still can't believe you had an 11pd baby:eek: She looks very petite now!

Hi!
My DD is 17mths and still hasn't reached the 10kg mark! She's about 9kg now and 76cm long. She was 3.1kg when she was born and 48cm long. Unlike her mummy who was 11 pound 8 born and 52 cm
Anyway, I too worried about her lack of weight gain, usually after getting her weighed at a chemist offering a free baby clinic and having the midwife treat me as if I was mistreating my child by not feeding her! Well I no longer go to those clinics and I don't get her weighed, only on the scales at home anyway. Why can't babies be all shapes and sizes?? Since when were they all suppose to be "average"??

My 6 month old is 8.2kgs. The thing about those charts is that they're from statistics of formula fed babies from the 1950's, and if your baby is anywhere outside of the 40th-70th percentile, then the CHN stresses you out about it. It is not worth even looking at those charts - is your baby weeing and pooing appropriately? Is your baby happy and generally healthy? Is your baby sleeping OK? Is your baby drinking and eating OK? If the answer to all those is "yes" then your baby is fine. Like you said, your baby has small-framed genes. How weird would it be if 2 small-framed people produced a gigantor baby???!!! :p

Bloody motherhood - damned if you do, damned if you don't!

MissyMack, you sound like a fantastic mummy so just know in yourself that you are doing a wonderful job, and don't let anyone else make you doubt yourself. :)

My son Travis was 3.7kg (8"3) born and he is about to turn 21 months in a week and weighs 11.44kg (25 pound) and he eats all day. So I would be to worried about his weight.

I have the same problem with my son, although he looks skinny he weighs 11.5kg and is 15 months old, but he is quiet long, and very active.....

People do tend to make a big deal out of it, they assume that because he is always hungry that he doesnt get fed:no: , not true.......

If you know what you are doing is right, dont worry too much about it....

But maybe you could get the dietitian to write you a letter stating the good health he is in, and what he is getting fed is right for him, that way it covers you if your ex wants to try anything, and you can show him to give him some peace of mind abot the whole siituation....

Just and idea....

Jacob was 11lb and 55cm at birth. He has ALWAYS been on the 103rd percentile. He has recently turned 9 and is now 45kg and 147cm tall.

Brooke was 8lb 3oz and 50cm at birth, and has always been around average....sometimes dropping below because of her reflux. She is almost 8 and is now 24kg and about 124cm tall.

Matthew was 10lb 2oz and 53cm at birth. Like his brother, he sits right at the top of the chart. He is almost 2.5yrs old and is around 16.5kg and 98cm tall.

Every child is different, big or small, it doesn't matter as long as they eat good food, get lots of exercise and are healthy.
People these days are too obsessed with what others look like and what others are doing and need to learn to keep their mouths shut.

My DS is 11Kg now at 18 mths but only gained 100grams in 3 months.

Those graphs are really old though I dont think they have been revised since our grandparents were haveing babies.

I really dont think you have anything to worry about.

I'm sorry that as a wonderful mum, you have to justify yourself and your son's health when he is obviously fine!

Everyone just needs to back off and realise that you are the primary caregiver and you know - after all these months, what you are doing!!

They're are in the process of updating the charts as like someone else said they're outdated and based on formula feed bubs.

We are in the same boat as you. My dd2 does have something 'wrong' with her (although they still don't know what:rolleyes: ) and since birth we have been seeing paediatricians (had a terrible one to start with, but are now with a wonderful lady) and a geneticist.

We only just saw the paediatrician yesterday. DD2 is 15 mths next week and still only weighs 8.46kg and is about 74cm, so she, too, is in the bottom 10%. I think when they're in the bottom or right in the top they like to keep an eye on them to make sure everything is alright, and if they do find some underlying problem they can take action.

Ds was just under 2.5 kilo's at birth, then he stacked on the weight & everyone used to comment on how fat he was & all this other BS. Now at 21 months he only weighs 10.5 kilo's. He has got Spina Bifida so is really short for his age & doesn't move around. Everyone expected me to under feed him so he remained skinny. He had a huge appetite. Even though he is only 10.5 kilo's he still looks over weight for his length. My dad actually stopped talking to me because he thought we weren't feeding him properly because he is so short. :gloomy:

That's shocking Becca22 about your dad:mad: . Ppl can be quite rude when they don't know the reasons why something is the way it is (iykwim).

my boy is 6&1/2 mths & is 8.5 kg.
As The Queen said, as long as bubs body functions as it should who really cares how much they weigh. I only like to know so i get the right sized clothes.

DD is 15 months, and in a size 2. I'm guessing she's about 13-14kg...and she's about 85cm long.

Yep, she's a chubby baby with MASSIVE thighs (from me...lol)... and people always comment on that.

She HAS slimmed down a lot though - she used to have this round cannonball head... I laugh looking at her old photos... becuase she was HUGE.

DD gets plenty of exercise, she doesn't over-eat, but she's just chubby. It's just how she is.

Don't worry aobut what people say - unless your bub has like, all his bones sticking out, then it shouldn't mean a thing.

My dd was 8lb 7oz at birth and weighed 9kg at 12mo. My ds was 13lb 2oz at birth and weighed 8.5kg at a year old.

The docs were worried about neither of them and now at 5 ¾ and 3 ¾, they are both 15kg, tall at around 110cm, slim, healthy and extremely active!

They all seem to even out in the end ... the first few years seem to have little bearing on how they are going to end up.

Bailey was born 7lb 14oz and 51cms

He is now nearly 12 months and just 9.2kgs.

The funny thing is, people always say how big he is, I dont really see him as big, just normal for his age.

I dont think it matters whether your bub is big or small, people will always comment. I dont understand why people feel the need to comment- they wouldnt comment about another adults size to thier face, would they?

I see it that adults are all different shapes, sizes and heights- so are babies:yes:

Hey Missy!!

Its great that Mack is now in the 10% range!! At his age Connor was 10 kg (it was just all stored in those cheeks :p ) so Mack is starting to catch up which is great!!

I think its good that you are going to get him checked just to be sure. But like you say he is doing really well otherwise.

I think age 1 is an average weight of 10kg... so 9kg is pretty close dont you think!! :D

Love ya :hugs:
