Hi ladies of Tasmania! DH and I are thinking of coming to Tasmania on a holiday, and I want to hear from people in the know!!
What are the best tourist attractions? Where are the wine regions (very important!), where is there good fishing, and where are some other good places to visit?
Thanks!

Well I think Port Arthur is a great place to visit
I don't really fish but my DF goes to Bruni Island sometimes..
Wineglass Bay/Coles Bay has great walking trails if you like that kind of thing? And lovely beach too, very picturesque.

Come to Hobart! :D
You can go to Cadburys for the Chocolate Tour, there are lots of wine tours around the Huon and Chanell area and also over towards Richmond. :)
What things are you intersted in doing? :)

We want to see Port Arthur, and I want to go to some wineries. DH wants to fish and maybe go on some nice walks (we'll have DS with us, so not too strenuous!). The Cadbury factory is definitely on the list, and we also just want to see some nice natural scenery.

Yep - Hastings Caves, with the springs just down the road. and definitally the Tahune Airwalk
If you're looking at going to Cadburys make sure you book in advance, our customers were always missing out cause they didn't book early enough.

Hi Hazellew, There is so much to see and do Tassie. You will have a great time down here. When are you coming down? If it at the end of the year we have the "Taste of Tasmania" it's heaps of Tassie food, wine live bands  It on from the 28 Dec to the 3rd of Jan.
I have found some websites for you. The first one is the best. What area are you staying in? South or north?

hmmm, how long are you coming down for? If you've never been to Tassie before, you'll get a bit of a shock if you think you can do the whole state in a week... there's so much driving and so much to see!!
In the north of the state, there are heaps of wineries which are very good (on both the west and east Tamar) like Rosvears, Stathlyn, Marions, Tamar Ridge... as far as natural attractions go... the Gorge (Launceston) is always gorgeous and they have a great cafe with reasonably priced food and drinks. You can walk to Duck Reach from here too, an easy walk that follows the river. Also Cradle Mt. isn't too far away... the Dove Lake walk is really nice and easy (pretty much all board walk)
Fishing... depends if you like sea or fresh... there are some great fishing rivers and about 1/2 hour from Launceston there's a trout farm. Down the east coast (st. helens way) you can fish off jetty's or pay about $100 or so to go on a tuna boat... just depends on what you want to do :D
Now... down south... they have some good things too  Tahune airwalk (south of Hobart - bit of a drive, but if you're down that way...) Cockle creek + Hastings Caves I think that's where the hot springs are.
There are some good wineries as well (forget the names - sorry!!)
Port Arthur is great, and there are some really nice walks on the Tasman Penn. There's a blow hole too and some other natural rock formations which are quite spectacular.
Gosh... I sound like a tour guide!! :o I would suggest getting a map... have a look where things are before you say "I want to go here and here" Look at how much time you have and pick the most important!
I hope you have a great trip down and don't forget you can keep coming back!!

Thanks for the great advice everyone! I've been to Tasmania, but I was about 12 at the time so I don't really remember a lot. We're now thinking of maybe ten days - but probably still not enough time!!
Mischief - great idea! I'd love to meet the Tasmanian bubhubbers! I'll let you all know when we've confirmed our dates (we're thinking of arriving in Tasmania on New Year's Day - which means we'll be there for the food and wine festival!)

YAY Hazel! It would be great if we could meet up! :)
Maybe we could do it on the weekend so our hubbies can come too. Let us know! :D

we would agree with everyone else...and the point about the driving - it's true!! Tasmania, is like Dr. Who's tardis (you know the phone box thingy) it looks so small on the outside, but once you've got your foot through the door, you find yourself confronted with a great expanse. And if you like to drive Tassie has the sort that wind there way across the country side just like a snake. What may seem like only 100km's point to point, may feel like 3 hours endurance driving with corner, after corner after corner. This is why Targa Tasmania is such a hit, with drivers from all over the world.
In addition to the map suggestion - very good - another thing that you could do is go to http://www.whereis.com.au as this can help you with fairly accurate drive times point to point, you can also allow for a couple a stops on this site as well and it works it all out for you.

Hi everyone! Sorry about the delay in response. I've been desperately trying to find accommodation (seems you shouldn't leave until Nov to book a Dec/Jan holiday!:o ).
I'll be in Hobart for eight days, then I'll be heading home :( . I wanted to spend more time in Tassie, but DH and I have agreed that we're going to go back later on in the year to see the bits we missed out (a week is not long enough - plus the Cadbury factory is closed in Jan  ).
So, I'll be in your neck of the woods from 28th of Dec onwards :smiliedance:

:detective: Are you still having a hard time finding accommodation?
You and your family will have a great time down here. And the best thing is you get to come back later in the year too. You must not miss out on The Cadbury Factory, it's so yummy!
