My 6 month old gags on her food now that I have started to prepare it more lumpy in consistency. Initially I thought she was choking and was really alarmed, but now I know she doesn't like the lumps, as I have tried the same food in pureed form and she will have no problems with it. How can I get her to eat the lumpier food without forcing her to??

Maybe she's not ready for lumps?
has she got any teeth yet?
Felix didn't eat lumpy food until he was about 10-11 months old.
I'd listen to what she's telling you. There's no hurry on solids you know... They will eat them eventually!

wil didn't even start to eat solids properly, even in pureed form til around 6-7 months...he is 16 months now and eats pretty much what we eat - he loves shoving bits of vegies in his gob! i just gradually introduced lumpy food - maybe puree 1/2 and leave 1/2 lumpy? once you start with finger food then they learn to chew better and can handle lumps easier
all the best........

To change the consistency of Jakob's vegies I added a bit of rice cereal to get the desired lumpier effect. He wasn't ready for solids properly until he was about 7 months old.

She will start to accept the lumpier food when she's ready... try leaving it for a bit and give it a go in a week or so...there's no rush at this stage.

My 9 month old is so over pureed foods...she wants finger foods but isn't at the stage where she can feed herself....bring back the pureed food that I could shovel in with a spoon instead of having to sit there watching her chew every mouthful.

:) Thank you for the advice!! I guess she is not ready yet. As you say, there is no rush for the lumpier foods. Ela does not have any teeth yet, but I am not sure if that would affect it. I will let her lead me as to when she wants different food. Thanks!

Oh I had the same problem with my second child!
She was bottlefed for 10 months and just did not want to eat! It was not until 10 months that she accepted a bottle and started on pureed foods, I was always so concerned!

She then went onto lumpy foods at bout 12 months and now at 18 months eats whatever we do!

It can be worrying hey like like it was said before don't worry too much!!She will get there in her own time!!

I just read all your advice on solids and feel so much better now. My 6 month old won't take the more solid foods either so I've got her back on purees. I thought maybe it had something to do with her having no teeth but I wasn't sure. All the books tell you things have to be a certain way and it made me feel so much better to see real mum's offering more realistic advice. Thanks heaps! :)
