What is considered high blood pressure? I have heard that it is different for everybody and that it depends how much higher it is than your normal blood pressure?? Does anyone know?

It is different for everyone. But generally if its 140/90 or over it is considered high (although its the low end of high).

My BP was 142/85 today and my obs seemed pretty concerned with that. He said it has been high for the last few visits, although he didn't tell me what it was those times. I bought a BP machine today to watch mine and the booklet says anything over 135/85 is considered high. I think there are a lot of factors to consider though. Looks like I need to go on medication to keep mine down.

It's the bottom number that counts. for example 120/90 is not great but pretty ok but 120/110 is dangerous. I had pre-eclampsia and was admitted to hospital when my bp was 140/115. I was in hospital for weeks before finally being induced. It does depend on what your bp normally is though. On your very first antenatal appointment they should have taken a bp, they will work off that one. If your bp is too high you will see flashing lights in front of your eyes, get a cracking headache (these really hurt) and will be nauseous and vomiting. If you get to this stage go to the hospital absolutely immediately.
Pre-eclampsia though is not just high blood pressure, there are other symptoms/complications too.

I too suffered high blood pressure with my last baby and my bp got up to 160/110. I was hospitalised due to it being so high and it had to blood tests done, urine tested,bp monitered constantly. Anyway because of my bp being so high when my labour progressed i had to have an epidural, that was amaxzing. My bp did come down for a little while after baby was born, but at my six week check-up it was back -up to 160/110 again. After six months of watching it , because i do not like taking meds, i was put on Aldomet to be taken twice a day, i am now down to one a day. I also brought a bp moniter and i am so much better. Good luck with your bp and i hope everything is ok.:)

It's the bottom number that counts.

My GP told me that it was the top number that they were worried about with me. My bottom number has always been fairly normal but my top number has been 140. The hospital really annoyed me last week. They kept me there for six hours, four of those at fetal monitoring, because my BP had been 130/90. I understood their concern and was grateful that they were being careful but I was there for at least an extra hour than I should've been because of the doctor talking to other patients for half an hour each. They only took 30 seconds to tell me nothing was wrong and that I could go home, which made me wonder why they couldn't have just got a midwife to tell me.

At what stage in your pregnancy do they worry about your BP? I am only early on and was in a lot of pain the other week (6 weeks preg) and went to the hospital and my BP was 128/107. I was really worried and told them i was preg but they didnt seeem to worried. I live in the middle of nowhere and we are so short of doctors and have to travel such a long way to see them. I am having my baby in Adelaide, but that is 5 1/2 hours away so every time i am a little worried it is too far to hop in the car and check it out. Sorry for :ecomcity: , i just can wait til my 9 week ob appointment at the end of the month because i need to know that bubs is still okay. Gee first pregnancies can turn you crazy.

TTCin2007 speak to your ob and voice your concerns... My GP was really concerned with 180/90... MIL said if the 90 goes any higher I'm in some trouble (she doesn't know I'm pregnant yet)

But the 180 is high as well...

Dr said only way to naturally bring down BP is to lose weight or lots of excercise, no smoking, no caffeine and healthy eating...

Guess I'll be going on BP tabs when I see him on Friday... Funny thing is it isn't anywhere near that high here at home... 125/47 I think it was this morning...

If you don't feel right (don't worry about the MS if you have it as it can cloud your judgement on how you feel about your health) and can't get to a medical professional - call them and say you are concerned about such and such and is there anything you can do to help the situation until you see your OB... But make sure you let your OB know how you feel in full... be honest and don't think something doesn't matter because it does!! If you have any concerns, mention them, they will check and make sure everything is fine for you so you can not stress out!!

I'm 10 weeks and my GP was worried about my BP at 7 weeks...

I would check with another doctor is you are worried and it is your baby and your body so you should feel listened to. Sometimes doctors dont seem very sympathetic but being so far away i would definately want someone i felt comfortable with. good luck

Well mine was through the roof then!!! my blood pressure was 225/150 at 35 wks 1 day when i went for a routine visit to my GP. it had not moved previously through the pregnancy. i had no symptoms at all and they were very surprised i hadn't had a stroke. needless to say i was admitted to hospital that day and had my baby that afternoon. 12 months on i am still on medication because it is all over the shop and they are worried at my lack of symptoms.
