View Full Version : Using Cloth when out and about?

Hi all,
I have been reading through all the old posts on cloth but haven't been able to find an answer to my query.
I plan to use Pea Pods when my baby is born next May, but I'm wondering how this works when we are out and about either in public or at other people's houses?
Do you use disposables in these situations? Or is it acceptable to wash the poo down the toilet at someone else's house and put it in a nappy bag to take home to wash?
I'd like to avoid using disposables if possible, but I'm not sure how this works so ... Calling all experts!
Thanks for your help!
I've just started using my BBs out and about, and I never gave the poo a second thought, Hmm. Haven't had to deal with poo yet outside the house in cloth!
I use a wet bag that has 2 sides to it so my plan I guess would be just to chuck it in the bag in the dirty side, zip it up and wash it when I get home just as I would if I was at home-instead it'd go in a bucket. This would only be alright for a day trip though- not sure it'd be nice to open after being away for a few days!!
The pea pods come with their own wet bag to use when your out
If we have a pooe'y nappy when out and about I fold the nappy up really tightly and wash it out when I get home!

That's what I do too.
oh good OM & AngelKisses- that's kind of what I had in mind:thumbsup:
I do whatever suits at the time. Generally the poo gets wrapped up in the nappy and popped in a wet bag til I am home, but if I can, I try to get some of the poo off into the toilet and flush it.
You can also get biodegradable liners:

or:

which are great if you are expecting a poo and makes flushing it super super easy! Fabulous for travelling.

I find that my MCN are so much more reliable then disposables when out and about- I put it in a plastic bag (pooey or not) and bring it home if I need to do a change while out (quite rare). I'd do the same when visiting a friend, I don't think I'd flush any poo away... I would worry about stinking out their home.
However, at the end of the month I am travelling to my parent's place and staying for 2 nights- I'll take disposables for both kids. But I'll probably take my MCN to show them off! :D :p
I have always used disposables when we go to stay overnight somewhere, but after last weekend this will change, thanks to a leaky pooey Huggies, all up his back and over his pyjamas.
So now it will be a non-leaking Greens Anytime and we will take the poo home with us LOL, since we did anyway, all over his clothes.
We always use cloth whether we're at home or out.
We recently stayed at my parents house for a week. They didn't have a bucket, so we just put the nappies in a plastic shopping bag, and once we had a couple of bags I did a load. Being there for a week, and being my parents house, we of course just scrapped the poo into the loo.
If we're ever at someone's house for just a little bit, though, like the other ppl I'd just pop it in a bag and scrap it off once home. I always just use the plastic shopping bags (when I've forgotten my cloth shopping bags when shopping) as my wet bag.

I have those liners Lucy linked, but I always forget to use them LOL
If the poo is solid, I roll it off into a toilet or bury it in the garden or bush depending on where I am otherwise I fold the nappy up and put it in a wet bag till I get home.

I must be strange cos if I am at someones house I flush as much away as I can. No one has cared yet. Everyone knows babies poo and sometimes they stink the house before the nappy is reomoved iykwim. I don't think it matters really. I am sure whatever makes you comfortable will be fine.

Yup, me too!
Also, the first few months are a great time to get used to pooey nappies outside of the house, as until they are on solids, so long as they are breastfed, there is next to no smell in the poo! It is only after introducing solid's that they get that really stinky aroma. By this time, you are an expert at changing cloth outside of the home!:D

People keep saying this-
Hugh's BF baby poo is really stinky,
just what are we in for when he's on solids??

Matty's only smells bad when he has done sheep pellets, lol, other than that, it is rather odourless.
Jarred baby food though makes it REALLY smelly, so avoid it if you can.
We went away on holiday for the past 2 days. I just put all the dirty cloth (after discarding contents) in a wet bag but had to wash half way through (hubby gave me the impression we were only going for one night )
My hubby has taken Av out a few times in just a fitted and no cover

Hi everyone!
I do the same as everyone else- just bag it and deal with it at home. Unless Im at my Mum & Dads- then I scrape and flush and rinse them too! (Otherwise Mum will do it! She is super efficient and not scared of a cloth nappy!)
Should have seen this lady down at westfields changeroom when DD was about 2 months old. Im there with my cloth nappies, cloth wipes, cloth change mat and she says ever so condesendingly "Oh, she must be your first, you just wait until you have 3 and your good intentions will go OUT the window" Peh! I say:rolleyes:
What is it with these people?! All of the people from work said I wouldnt stick to cloth for a day with DD let alone after 3 kids  Except for greeny Noela :hugs: who said "good on you love!" I dont go around having a go at people who use "disgustables" so why should they have a go at me for doing the cloth thang?

I have had all 3 of mine in cloth until they were toilet trained or outgrew them (whatever came first) and I will do the same with this next one. I even had 2 in cloth at the same time for about 2yrs. it was no big deal and no extra work. When you are doing 2-3 loads of washing each day, what's one more load every couple of days??
People need to learn to zip their lips.

Oh, you should have told her that you already had 3-4 kids, that would have shut her up, LOL.
I had more trouble dealing with my first child than with 3 so um there! I gave up n cloth when my girl was3 weeks. Now I have 3 and my baby is in cloth full time. So much easier - people just don't know.
I wouldn't carry dirty nappies around though unless I had to. Not sue why you can't just put the contents in a toilet if one is available.
:smiliedance: Had a great cloth day out yesterday!
Before when I've been out with Hugh in cloth it's only been for smaller visits to places near by but yesterday we had a whole day in Broken Hill and it was very successful- no poos though.
It was like the first time Hugh went overnight in cloth, it was so easy I'm wondering what I was worried about and why I didn't do more of it before!
