Hi

My daughter is formula feed and has just turned 6 months old. I have read that it is OK to stop sterilising the bottles & teats at this stage, however I was unsure as to whether I should now stop boiling the water I use to make up the formula with.

Could you please advise what is recommended.

Many thanks :)

Dear Missus S,

There is conflicting advice regarding this issue. I have not been able to find NHMRC or Federal Government Health guidelines for what is the recommended standard. Some State Government information recommends boiling all water until 12 months, while other information suggests that boiled water until 6 months is usually adequate, except for formula (continue boiling for 12 months). It is consistently suggested, however, that rain / tank water is boiled for children up to 5 years of age, and that it is always best to boil drinking water if there are ever any concerns about water safety.

Water and food safety issues are not really within my field I’m sorry, but I would suggest asking your doctor/child nurse/council/health department in your local area for the local recommendations – water quality can vary from area to area.
