Hi im a first time mum and my son is 10 months and is still not saying the ma or da sounds.. he does sqweal and make the "ha" noise but thats it. Im not sure if its just paranoia but is there something wrong?? He does repsond to his name and if i ask him where the fish are he will look in the direction of the fish etc.. Does this sound "normal" to you because everything that i read seem to say that he should be saying it by now and all the other babies i seem to know say it too? Did your baby do this "late"?

My bub only started to do this about two weeks ago, at 9 months.
He seems to have got bored with it, and stopped again for the most part.
He just woke up one morning, and literally started babbling all day. I've not been concerned, as he seems to be doing everything else right, and I have no doubts about his hearing, as he responds to whispers and quiet noises.
He's also been late to start solids, as he seemed to be having trouble working out how to handle something non-liquid in his mouth.
Once he started babbling, he seemed to cope with solids better too.
I've just put it down to him gaining control over his oral musculature a bit late.
My DS was quiet naturally and didn't say dad or mum until much later then 10 months. Probably around 15-16 months and then it was only dad. Even now he will only go "mum mum mum" when he is whinging. He is 20 months now and really babbles a lot and is slowly picking up new words.
At 10 months, try not to be concerned. All kids are different. I used to worry incessantly about his speech development but have decided there is no point and he will say things when he is ready to. :)

My baby is doing the same things as yours. Remember don't worry too much, they will do it when they are ready. It sounds like you have a very alert little boy. Our DD is fairly quiet, but you can see that she is taking everything in, and that sounds like thats what your DS is doing. All the best
