Having outgrown the Baby Bjorn (mainly because I just can't take her weight anymore) I am looking to buy a back pack style carrier for DD.
I'd really like your advice on ones that you've tried that really minimise neck and shoulder discomfort eg. maybe have a waist belt?????
Let me know what you have and how you find it for longer walks. I'd love to go on some walks that the stroller can't manage.
Thanks

I very highly recommend the ERGO. it is fantastic!
Yep - I am a huge fan of the ergo. Check it out at www.ergobabycarrier.com for the full story or an Australian site is www.carryingaway.com.au. It is a soft carrier like the baby bjorn but has a hip band so the weight is distributed. You can wear baby on front or back and up until they are about 4 or 5 years old. They are also adaptable for newborns (I have sold my baby bjorn and will never go back - I am a convert!!)
I love my ergo. I originally had the original ergo but then updated it to the NG Ergo and will never turn back. I'm getting a family friend to make me a baby insert so i can carry "Dingle"

I have the Ergo Baby Carrier as well, I saw it first on a plane trip to Europe when an other single travelling woman had her 8 months old son in it and he absolutely loved it. I was begging my husband for weeks to buy it for me beacause our daughter was too big for the baby bjorn and I just wanted a carrier for either travelling or bringing out laundry and other occations, where a carrier would be handy. I really love this carrier, especially because of the back support it gives you. It took me a few tries to put it on first (you will need to practise it a bit, but there is even a video of how to do it on their website) but once you get the hang of it, it will benefit your baby as well as you. I think I will keep the Baby Bjorn for my next child, when it is very little but I might look into the Newborn insert you get for the Ergo.
I hope you have no trouble making a decission! All the best

I's have to say the macpac ... (sorry girls!) ... I've seen the ergo and the physical gymnastics one has to do to put bubs into it is mindblowing!!! Certainly can't be easy to do in an emergency. There's also no rain protection, no extra bag for shopping, no nappy bag, no rail to put extra coat, jackets and goodness know what else on, no nothing!!! There's also no harness either and I know macpacs have all of these ...
As for comfort for the carrier? Macpac's been making backpacks for 80yrs and they come with a lifetime guarantee from faults ... and they last generations ... they also understand babies growing bodies and they come with adjustable foot rests so baby's legs don't feel fatigued dangling out in space.
Personally I love the vamoose (but I'm greedy!) and whilst we don't have kids yet, I've used the macpac Possum lots with a friend's kid who's about 13kgs and never once felt tired or sore.
The resale value on a macpac is pretty impressive too ... always worth considering! ;)
We bought the Macpac Possum about a month ago for DS first birthday. He loves it and will sit in it for hours and it is really comfy. It is easily adjustable and the back support changes to fit me (little and short) and dh (big and tall). You can also pack other things in it and it is supposed to carry a 4 yr old.
We havent gone for anything longer than an hour 1//2 hike yet, but we are working up to it. Well worth the $300, we bought it at Anaconda, but I have seen them available on ebay and other websites.
Good luck, I hope you find what you are looking for

Has anyone got or heard what a Phil and Ted carrier is like??
I've got the phil n teds one, the deluxe one, think it was called "the escape".
Fantastic, sun hood and wind/rain protector, comfy for me and must be comfy for him as he often falls asleep.
Used it from bout 6 months and he is now 20 months, so got my money;s worth!
He weighs 12kgs now and I do find him heavy, but I think of it as a workout, save gym money  DH has no probs.
Now that he is heavier I need a ledge to put him on and off, I can not swing him up onto my back from the ground.
I love the ERGO! It takes me less than a minute to put on, it's small and compact (I'm not into the one's that look like you're going on a hiking trip) and super comfy!
DD is in hers at least twice a day. I walk the dog with her on my back. She gets so excited when she sees it!
As far as rain protection....an umbrella over me covers her too.
I'm getting my grandma to make me a Mei Tai because I like variety. I've heard good things about the Mei Tai's!
