Does a new room/cot cause bubs to be unsettled?

Hi all,

We have recently moved house and Tayla has been really unsettled. What makes things harder on the munchkin is that for a few days a week I stay at my parents while I work.

Has anyone else found that their baby is unsettled and sleep patterns are disturbed when moving house/room and then sleeping in a new room in a portacot elsewhere?

What did you do to help the transition?

My bub is always unsettled when he is in a portacot. The mattress isn't very comfortable and I'm sure it feels much different.

How long will the change be ? I was lucky enough to find a 2nd hand cot similar to his own which is now at my parent's house. The surroundings are still different but I make sure the cot and the bedlinen are similar. I also take a couple of familiar toys and put them in with him.

We've recently moved, luckily we didn't have too many troubles. Our little one was unsettled for the first few days, but he adjusted fairly well. It was only the day time sleeps we had a problem with (waking up somewhere different I think) nights he slept through as normal. He was 4 months when we moved. I usually put our little one in the porta cot for his day time sleeps so he is used to it should we be out and he need to sleep in it.

We just moved on Saturday and Andrew hasn't had a decent nights sleep yet! Before the move, he was sleeping through the night 6-6 and the last 3 nights he has been up and down all night long. Its absolutely exhausting! His room is set up the same way as it was in the old place, all the furniture in the same positions, all the same toys in the cot, posters on the wall etc.

He sleeps just fine during the day, in fact he sleeps really well! About 3 good length sleeps 45mins+. The night time is exhausting me though, I haven't slept well for ages and it shows! Nothing is getting done during the day, as soon as he sleeps, I crash on the couch!

I'm hoping that he will get over it shortly and be back to normal. Fingers crossed. I think he might be teething as well, so all in all I think he is coping fairly well.

The bugger is that this is just a temporary move and we will be moving again in 2 months! So we'll have to go through it all again! Aargh! :eek:

Yes moving a baby from one room to another and moving from one cot to another can cause unsettleness. I think the reason for this is because they are not familar with their surroundings so their get worried. Maybe you can place something in the room that is familar to the baby, so it helps settles her. Maybe even a mobile over the cot might help settle her down. I think what also could help is reassuring her by going in the room to say its ok and then leave. Im not very sure exactly what to do because i was lucky as the transition was a breeze. When we made the decision to move our DS from his bassinett into his cot and from our bedroom to his room, i didnt get any sleep. It wasnt from him being awake or unsettled but because i thought he would be! :p I hope some of these suggestions help, maybe the other girls might have better suggestions.

When i moved house 6-8weeks ago i set Maxs room up exactly how it was it the old house, so cot on same wall facing same way, tallboy,change table etc exactly the same in the new house and i havnt had a problem day or night... :D
