I've just had my second bub and as I had attachment issues with my first bub this is the first I'm actually B/Feeding.... anyway I've had some conflicting info on the best technique to use. The first is 20mins one side, burp for 10mins and then 20mins on the next. The other is empty one side and then offer the second and if they take it continue. My question is though what if they are still hungry after the 40mins in the first option and in the second how can I tell if my breast is drained other then DS fussing around especially when I can still hand express drops? I'm just not sure which technique to adopt so I've been alternating and kind of just winging it. Sometimes it feels like he can feed for hours if he wanted!

Confused.

Hi Pebilz,
your instincts are spot on - the first option is old fashioned, a bit regimented and may not work with an individual baby.

The best advice is to 'watch your baby, not then clock'. When a mum is trying to time feeds it soon becomes a chore rather than the pleasurable relaxed experience breastfeeding can be.

Another good piece of advice that is backed by research ( ultrasound studies of the breasts whilst breastfeeding and babies sucking) is to 'empty the first breast first'. Your breasts will never be completely 'empty' but your baby will suck more slowly or fuss as the milk slows in one breast - as you have noticed ( see! you are attuned to your baby, wise mummy) - and this is an indication to change sides.

Really it is fairly simple - trust yourself and watch your baby closely -you will get to know when she is hungry, when she is ready to change sides, when she needs burping and when she is full.

For really good breastfeeding info I highly recommend joining the Australian Breastfeeding Association as you get a lovely FREE book "Breastfeeding Naturally' with your membership. This way you can check any advise you get and remove all the stress as you take on what works for you and discard the rest.
