View Full Version : Best Cat litter
Just wondering what cat litter everyone is using.. i've bought the most expensive one on the shelf, and still wasnt happy with it
Breeder's Choice - doesn't leave dust and mess everywhere, and made of recycled paper

i had a really good one that i brought from coles (the coles reliance brand) and now they have stopped making it. don't buy the crystal ones as they are a really big waste of money.
Yep your right B&B. Whats the big hype about the crystal ones? i dont see how they were any better then the $1. 40 bag of homebrand litter

I second that  much better than the other ones we tried. My cats seem to like it too

Oh no no I love the crystal ones, I clean out my cats kitty litter everyday, but every now and then I forget and with the crystals there is no smell and no dust. They are totally worth the extra $$

I think it made the urine smell worse? Or it could just be me

I use homebrand with the gel liners and change the whole thing every day.
Breeders Choice fan here too, we've been using it for years. Another good one... I can't remember the name but it's lucerne pellets (also good for rat and mouse betting), we had to stop using it because I'm alergic to lucerne, but it's great for keeping the smell down.

I think thats the one they use for the kitties at the pet shops.. might call in and have a squiz..
Cheers. ;)
You can also get it at your super market too, I just remembered it's called Natty cat.
You can buy bigger bags at your pet shop or produce.

Thanks Sarie ;)
We get ours delivered froma qld company, 5 x 10 kg bags cost me $30.00 and lasts ages!
I think it's better than Catsan and any other, it's clumping catlittler and takes away the smell as well

I alternate between lucerne and the cheap Coles ones. I used the Crystals once....with 4 cats, it was a total waste of money.
Thought i would throw this q out there :D
Do you think certain brands of cat food make there number 2's smellier
(sorry this is probobly such a silly q :o )
Thanks Sarie ;)
No worries, I remember things eventually, just need to give my pregnant brain time to process things:p I'm sure it gets worse the more children I have:banghead:
Def wet food makes it worse than dry.
Though probably the cheaper stuff does make it a bit smellier.
Though I did put my old girl onto Whiskas Senior and she had wind for a couple of days... holy cow she was rotten!

It's true - the cheaper the food (generally), the worst the poos.
Commercial supermarket cat food is full of fillers and not so nutritious things, whereas ones brought at the vet for example are more likely to contain more meat products.
I had to switch one of my cats to the expensive food because of the poo factor.
another q
With kitten food.. they recommend use until they are 12 months,
Would you feed them kitty food for that long? or change to adult sooner?

I alternate between Breeders choice, and the Coles Reliance paper one, whatever's cheaper on the day :D. I think the paper ones make it alot less smelly, and and i only change mine once a week (but my cats are only in at night).
Cheap food is definitely a factor. I buy whiskas atm, but looking at buying premium stuff in the future. I've seen (and smelt ) the difference in my dogs poo since i started him on a raw meat and premium biccie diet. No smell at all! They actually need less of the premium stuff as well, so even though its expensive, it evens out....

I swear by 'catsan' (not the crystals)
It clumps well and for our two cats half a 7kg bag lasts one week and if its a good week an extra 3 days...so essentially one bag can last for over 2 weeks for our two cats...so for one it would last for 1 month...DH cleans it out as often as possible...this prolongs the life of any litter

Also a fan of Breeders Choice. Our silly moggie can't get the hang of keeping it all in the tray (she's 6) no matter how big the tray she invariably kicks some litter out and the breeders choice is by far the easiest to clean up, no dust and superabsorbant.

I use the crystal one. My cat hardly ever uses the kitty litter - he goes outside in the garden 99% of the time.
I love the crystal ones as well, i normally take the poos out everyday, but only change the whole tray once a week.
It doesnt smell, however at first i was 'mixing' it everyday and that made it smell a little.
But now with just removing the poos and chaning it once a week is fine.
One of the 2kg bags normally lasts 3 changes.
Also another tip if your cat is one to flick it everywhere like mine does, i am now using a plastic storage tub, its about the same size as a normal litter tray but the sides are about 20cm high, no more kitty litter on the floor :)

Ahhh good idea about the plastic storage container.
We have to unfortuantly have our kitty litter in our ensuite - its the only place to keep it away from our dogs and if he does use it, he flicks it everywhere and its like crunch crunch when you walk into the ensuite.
And I think the crystals are great. The absorb the smell so well. Normal kitty litter lets off a stench after a couple of days, so you have to be on the ball way more.

Another Breeder's Choice fan, plus if you have a flood like from a washing machine, it absorbs the water fantastically.
I think ours is called Tidy cats? I cant remembber exactly, we get it from the pet store on a massive bag with handles or comes in smaller carry container with a handle and eeven though its heavy its easy to pour - its a clumping and doesnt smell - we have 2 cats that use it.
As for foods - we feed ours more expensive stuff - whiskas they get occasionally as its like the equivalent of Mc Donalds to us! The cheaper it is the smellier it is - also gut upsets on cheaper ones i found - stinky gas too! YUK!

We use the cheap Woolworths brand.
