I had been booked in to be induced as I had gestational diabetes and high blood pressure. Anyway, at about 9:30pm I was administered the gels. My partner hung about till about 11.30pm and as nothing was happening, he left to go home. I was told that nothing would probably happen till the next afternoon, which was hours away, so I just sat back and read a book. The nurse gave me a sleeping tablet but I was too excited to sleep.

I had my birth all figured out and planned. I had planned to have a completely pain free labour, was going to have an epidural at the slightest amount of pain, then sleep through my contractions till it was time to push. I was sooooooo out of touch, as the reality of my labour turned out to be much much different.

Wasnt feeling anything until about 2:00am, when I started getting slight contractions. They began like dull period pains, and gradually became more and more intense. By 3:00am I was starting to feel quite uncomfortabe, so I asked the midwife to call my partner to come in. Come 3:30am-4:00am I was in excruciating agony. I never expected a contraction to feel so intense, it was unbearable!

My partner arrived, and I was having contractions one after the other with hardly any gap between. I remember crying out "Where are the bloody gaps!" and the midwife said that they were so close together because the baby wasnt far away. I asked for an epidural, but they all seemed to try to persuade me to do other things to ease the pain. The midwife was adamant that I try a shower and I did-it was bloody horrible. After I struggled out I hadto try to dry myself while having contractions that were ripping me apart.

I crawled back on the bed in agony. Asked for another epidural and they gave me pethidine and gas. I cant even remember asking for pethidine, but I do know that it did absolutely nothing for the pain. I began to use the gas to breathe into with every contraction, and even though it did not take away the pain, it made my breathing easier and made the pain a little easier to deal with. I remember that as I was having a contraction I was making noises like a wild animal as I breathed into the gas pipe! For some strange reason I remember being overly concerned about making too much noise and bothering the other ladies on the ward!

I asked for an epidural, and I was stoned off the gas. They broke my waters, and the anathesist arrived and administered the drip. I sat up and leant against my partner preparing myself for teh epidural. I made him wait until I was between contractions!

Then, all of a sudden, just as he was about to insert the needle, my bosy just took over and I pushed as hard as anything. I screamed out "Oh my god! I am pushing and I cant stop!" The anathesist said "Sorry, I cant give you an epidural, the baby is on the way." And I was like "Nooooo! Come back!"

From here on, my body just took over completely and I could do nothing to control it. I had no control at all, I just hadto lie there and let it do what it had to do. The pushing was like nothing I have ever experienced before. My body pushed and pushed, so hard it felt like I was being ripped in two, and I couldnt stop it. I dont know why you hear women being told to push in labour, because you cant help not pushing!

It was kind of a relief at this stage, as the contractions had ended and I was off on the gas. I must have been half hanging off the bed because I heard the midwives telling me to move back onto the bed but couldnt bring myself to do so, and my partner and the anathesist hadto life me back onto the bed!

All of a sudden I knew the baby was crowning. It didnt hurt, there wasnt that ring of fire that some describe, but an intense feeling of fullness and stretching. The midwife was massaging down there, and I knoew they wanted me to hold on with the pushing so I didnt tear. I said "Is he coming out?" and the midwife said yes and asked if I wanted to touch him and I said no, just get him out of me!

Then I gave one almighty push, my partner cried out "Oh wow!" and the midwife held before me my beautiful son, Lachlan James. He was wide eyed, cross eyed and making sucking motions with his mouth! I couldnt believe that I had done it, and was wondering why he wasnt crying. I asked this, and they said that he was in a bit of shock because it was such a quick birth. I watched as the paedeatrician examined him, was told he hadto be removed from the room to be examined. But I didnt let them take him anywhere until they showed me he was tagged because for some reason I had a fear that my baby would get mixed up with someone elses.

Ten minutes later I was reunited with the most gorgeous bub ever.

So thats my birth story... it was so much different to what I had anticipated. Although it was excruciatingly painful, It was a wonderful experience in so many ways, and I love reflecting on the night my baby was born. Thanks for reading!
