View Full Version : my bub has tounge tie!
my little boy Landon (almost 2months) was born with tounge tie, so i have been using nipple shields on the advice of the lactation consultant and speach therapist from the hospital. they seem to be working but it seams my baby has slowed down his feeds abit.he is grizzly in the afternoon, but sleeps all night. i feed him every 2 hours normally, with the time spent on the breast ranging from 20-40mins but he has been taking over an hour and falls asleep on the breast. when i try to wake him, while he is still on, he wont wake so i put him down after burping him and within 30mins he wants to feed again....this goes on all day until about 5:30....(i know this is a confusing post but im lost!!) is he not getting enough to eat? what can i do to make sure he is?

Hi Barbz,
It sounds as though you need to see your lactation consultant again for another assessment of your baby's feeding.
Without watching your baby feed, Im sorry I cant make an assessment as to what is happening regarding his feeding patterns and sleepiness at the breast- there may be a variety of reasons - is he having a dummy, for instance? is he having plenty of wet and dirty nappies? is he becoming tired feeding because it is hard work for him? Is your milk supply in need of a boost, since sometimes long term use of a nipple shield can reduce stimulation to your nipples and affect milk supply. This assessment is a task for your lactation consultant or baby health nurse ( although not all baby health nurses are lactation consultants) and if you have concerns regarding your baby's health in general, please see your GP or peadiatrician.
There are some different thoughts on tongue tie - some health professionals will advise snipping the tongue tie depending on how badly it affects feeding and whether it is likely to affect speech later. It is great that you have seen a speech therapist and a lactation consultant but please keep telling them what is happening so they can give followup care and support.
