hi all
just a couple of quick questions:
1. last pregnancy i was mostly very good about not eating preprepared salads, cold meat, raw fish or soft cheeses, though i did break the rules once or twice with these things when i was sure they were really fresh and smelled really good (naughty I know! :( ). Did anyone else break the rules occasionally?? (I just want to make myself feel less guilty !!! hehehe)
2. Would it be okay to eat goat's/sheep's cheese (which i love) if I put it on a pizza, so it was cooked for 15-20 mins. I think so. WHat do you think?
3. Have you ever heard first-hand of anyone experiencing birth defects or miscarraige due to eating these things??
(I believe the experts, doctors and web-sites that say it can happen. just curious as to whether people have come across it first-hand for themselves....)
thanks for your replies.
rachel :)

Hi Rachel
I am far from perfect on the food issue although i do try very hard...
as far as i know if you "cook" the soft cheeses they are ok to eat.
I do not know of anyone who has had pregnancy related issues with these kinds of foods but i do know of someone who has died from Listeriosis (sp?) so it is a VERY real disease to me.....
Sorry not much help i realise.....

I guess many women get away with eating all the 'bad' stuff, especially our mothers before us. The thing is, Listeria CAN cause miscarriage, which is devasting for anyone to go through. If you have prepared foods yourself and are sure it's been kept at the right temperature then it's up to you. Listeria dies at high temperatures ( hence insistiting that your take away food is piping hot). I'm unsure if Goats cheese is prone... I know my favourites are though- brie, cam, all the soft cheeses... I've cheated a bit this pregnancy with eating ham, usually in a hot jaffle... but I've cut that out now.
I'm planning on a big feast when I give birth :D with all the bad stuff!

Hi there Rachel
I was soo paranoid about what went in my mouth (wish i could be when not preg lol). I ruled out definetly no takeaway. My husband enticed me a couple of time with KFC but that was rare and afterwards i felt so guilty so i pretty much only ate at home.

I have quite happily had smoked salmon at better (and very busy) restaurants.
I stay away from prepared salads anyway - they are generally ikky compared to home made, and I'm not one to go chasing after a thickshake or soft serve.
Soft cheeses are fine if cooked - I made spinach and ricotta lasagne today.
If I buy deli meat, I get it only from a very busy continental deli, and they slice it for me while I wait, and if I don't eat it within 36 hours, I leave it for the rest of the family.
My OB advised me to be mindful, but not paranoid.

I think the only issue with these foods is that they are the most 'likely' foods to contain bad bacteria and therefore the most likely to cause any type of food poisoning which could obviously make you ill and could therefore affect the bub.
I was pretty careful with everything that I ate but then wondered why. I have only ever had one bout of food poisoning (in thirty something years) so the chances, whilst are real, are also very slim.

Wow.. you guys are all much more careful than me!! :o My doc warned me about raw fish, alcohol, caffeine, pre-prepared salads.... but I have bought chicken meat in the plastic wrap from the supermarket and had it on sandwiches (you know when it's cryo-vacced (sp?). Is that bad?? I thought it was only if it was sitting out in the open that it was a problem. And I have had take-away too. Oh dear. Do I need to be more careful??
