View Full Version : Gender Determination on Scan

 Ladies, I have been thinking this morning about differences in scanning procedures here and overseas. DH's cousin and his wife live in LA and are 4wks further along then us - so she is currently 14wks pregnant with their first baby. Anyhoo they were told at a 12wk scan that they were having a girl - and there didn't seem to be any hesitation in this determination. Now when we went to our scans with DD from memory they wouldn't tell us before at least 16wks what the sex was - because of how swollen genitals are in utero - the chances of mix ups would be astronomical. Has anyone been told anything different?

A girlfriend of mine in the US was able to find out the sex at an earlier stage than I was. We didn't want to know, but she found out at approximately 14-16 weeks that she was having a girl and she did.
Perhaps a technology thing?

I read earlier today (from the expectantsee screensaver) that you can tell from 12weeks the babies gender. Maybe they do have slightly better technology in the states that makes it easier to tell, but maybe it's just to avoid confusion that they don't tell you until later here?

Hi all. I usually hang out on the June thread but am likely to have bubs by C-section at the end of May!
I would be really interested to hear if there is a definitive answer on this as I was told that before 16 weeks the sex couldn't accurately be determined in a scan (not matter how advanced!). Some friends, both doctors, were told from a 14 week scan that bubs was a boy. They were 100% certain themselves. 16 weeks later they had a girl!!! So I am very suspect that anyone could tell from a 12 week scan. Obviously the sonographer as a 50/50 chance of being right!! Don't we all!!
A brisbane based scientist has developed a test, like a pap smear, that can be carried out from 4 weeks to determine the genetic make -up of a baby (ie check chromosomes etc). It can also obviously find out the sex. However its stil in clinical trials but its been said that it will replace CVS and amnio etc for pre-birth desting for defects as it has no risk of M/c. It'll also be used a lot by parents to find out the sex early too I suspect. Lets just hope its not misused!

Yeah I mentioned this to the sonogrpaher who did mine this week at 12 weeks 1 day. ( see my post in the general preg board) Anyways she said that 3 lines for a girl and 2 lines for a boy, this early you may or may not see the pee pee depending how developed it looks. But the lines is what they look for. Anyways, she wouldn't comment as they just like to wait that little bit longer.
